Eid ul Fitr: Traditions and Rituals

Eid al-Fitr traditionally begins at sunset on the night of the first sighting of the crescent moon. If the moon is not visible after the 29th day of the previous lunar month, the holiday is observed the next day. Depending on the community, Eid al-Fitr is observed for a single day to three days. On the Day of Eid, it is forbidden to fast, and a special prayer is marked for this occasion. Before saying the Eid prayer, food/cash is donated to the needy and the poor as a required act of charity (Zakat-ul-Fitr). 

The gathering prays for Eid in an open space like a field, community hall or masjid. For this Eid prayer, there is no call to prayer, and there are only two prayer units. The number of Takbirs and other prayer components varies depending on the branch of Islam observed. The Al-Fatihah is then read by the Imam, and then another Surah. Ruku and sujud are recited by the crowd as in other prayers. Thus, the first rak'ah is finished.

For the second rak'ah, the congregation stands and folds their hands. The Imam then recites Surah Fatiha, followed by another Surah. Following that, three Takbirs are called out just before the ruku, each time raising and dropping hands. The congregation utters Allahu Akbar for the fourth time before entering the ruku. The rest of the prayer is said according to tradition. The Eid prayer is now complete. A khutbah takes place after the prayer.

Shia Procedure

The Niyyat is recited first, followed by five Takbirs. Every Takbir of the first rakat includes the recitation of a unique Dua. The congregation then offers Ruku and Sujud as they would in other prayers after the Imam has finished reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and Surat Al-'A`lá. The same procedures (five Takbeers, Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and Surat Al-'A`lá, Ruku and Sujud) are repeated in the second Rakat. Following the prayer, the khutbah begins.
