A chef is a skilled professional cook and tradesman who specializes in a particular cuisine and is trained in all areas of food preparation. Chef de cuisine is the origin of the word ‘chef.’

Both formal education from an institution and on-the-job training under an experienced chef are options for chefs. The typical chef's outfit consists of a toque (a hat), a neckerchief, a double-breasted jacket, an apron, and sturdy shoes (that may include steel or plastic toe-caps).
