The most prestigious film awards show in India is the National Film Awards. It was founded in 1954 and has been managed by the Indian government's Directorate of Film Festivals, along with the International Film Festival of India and the Indian Panorama, since 1973.
The winning entry is chosen by a national jury chosen by the government each year. The prizes are given out at a ceremony in New Delhi where the President of India is present. The launch of the National Film Festival, where award-winning movies are screened for the general audience, comes next.
Declared for movies made in the preceding year all across the nation, they have the distinction of honoring the greatest of Indian cinema on the whole and giving out prizes for the best movies in each nation's regions and languages.

In 1954, the Awards were first given out. The ceremony was organized by the Indian government to celebrate films produced all over the country and to promote the growth of Indian art and culture. The Indian Directorate of Film Festivals has managed the ceremony and other important annual film events in India since 1973.
Feature and non-feature films are the two primary categories for the National Film Awards. The Directorate of Film Festivals in India selects the jurors. The Government and the Directorate have little control over which movies are chosen for consideration or which movies end up taking home prizes. The jury panels must meet severe requirements before they may evaluate a movie. Each year, over 100 films from throughout the nation that fall under the categories of Feature and Non-Feature are submitted and approved for prizes.
Every year, a piece of regulations known as the National Film Award Regulations presents a list of requirements. There are numerous clauses in the eligibility requirements. One of them explicitly states that a movie's creators, especially the director, must be Indian citizens. Films entering the competition must be made in India, and if a foreign corporation participated in the coproduction, up to six requirements must be met for the movie to be eligible.
To be eligible for consideration by the jury, a picture must be certified by the Central Board of Film Certification between January 1 and December 31, according to the requirements. The Feature Film jury will determine whether a movie qualifies as a feature or a non-feature. A portion of the eligibility list's regulations specifies which films are ineligible for competition admission.
Through the publication of numerous books, essays, reviews, newspaper pieces, and studies, the Best Writing on Cinema department hopes to promote the study of and appreciation for cinema as an art form as well as the sharing of knowledge and critical understanding of the art form.
A lifetime achievement award is given to one celebrity every year for their exceptional contribution to the expansion and advancement of Indian cinema. This award bears the name of Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema.
A Medallion, a monetary award, and a certificate of merit are given to each award recipient. Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus Award) has been made eligible for six categories from the Feature Films section, as well as two each from the Non-Feature Films and Best Writing on Cinema parts, and the remaining categories for Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus Award).

The National Film Awards are India's highest film honor, established in 1954.
The President of India presents the awards in several categories, including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
The selection process for the awards is based on a two-tier system, with a national panel of experts selecting the nominees and a separate jury determining the winners.
The awards are in various regional languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, and Tamil.
The National Film Awards have been given to some of India's most acclaimed and respected filmmakers, including Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and Shyam Benegal.
Some of India's most iconic actors have also been awarded, including Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, and Amitabh Bachchan.
The National Film Awards have been a source of controversy in the past, with some filmmakers and actors refusing to accept the awards in protest of the selection process.
The National Film Awards have also been criticized for being biased towards mainstream commercial cinema rather than promoting independent and experimental films.
In 1968, the President’s Gold Medal for the All India Best Feature Film was split into two awards, one for the Best Feature Film and another for the Best Feature Film in a particular language.
In 1974, a new category was added for the Best Film on Family Welfare, later renamed Best Film on Social Issues in 1984.
The Directorate of Film Festivals honored the top Indian cinematic achievements of 2020 in the 68th National Film Awards ceremony, which featured the presentation of the National Film Awards. The COVID-19 epidemic caused the awards presentation to be postponed from its scheduled date of 3 May 2021. On 22 July 2022, the winners were announced, and on 30 September 2022, the prizes were given out.
