Amjad Ali Khan is an Indian sarod player. Born in 1945 in Gwalior, to a prominent musical family, he was surrounded by music since birth. His father, Hafiz Ali Khan came from a long line of musicians who claimed to have invented the sarod. Amjad Ali Khan was taught by his father, who was one of the most sought after musicians of his time.
Amjad Ali Khan gave his first recital at the tender age of six. By the age of eighteen he was already travelling to the United States to perform. Since then he has been a passionate performer and proponent of Indian Classical Music, helping it gain recognition globally. Though he comes from a long tradition of classical musicians, Amjad Ali Khan’s perspective on music has always been progressive and he has collaborated with musicians from other genres regularly.
He is the recipient of both the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan for his contributions to Indian music.

Amjad Ali Khan hails from the Bangash lineage, who have been musicians for generations. His father, Hafiz Ali Khan, was a court musician in Gwalior and was greatly renowned. Hafiz Ali Khan ensured his son had hands-on training with the sarod right from childhood, which made him highly skilled before he was an adult.
The family’s musical legacy continues as Amjad Ali Khan’s sons, Ayaan and Amaan Ali Khan are also accomplished sarod players who were also given training by their father.
In 1963, barely out of his teens, Amjad Ali Khan began his career as a performer when he visited the United States for a public show. He performed regularly all over India and the world. His dedication and skill earned him a Padma Shri in 1975. His musical impact in the United States was so strong that the state of Massachusetts declared April 20 as Amjad Ali Khan Day in 1984. He also received honorary citizenship from the cities of Houston, Nashville and Tulsa.
In 1991 he won the Padma Bhushan and in 2001 the Padma Vibhushan.
