Domestic Career

Hameed made his first-class debut for Lancashire against Glamorgan in August 2015. He was replaced in place of Paul Horton who batted first alongside Karl Brown. In his opening innings he scored 28 runs.  He participated in three more first-class games that season averaging 42 and with a high score of 91. 

Prior to the 2016 season Hameed agreed to a four-year deal with Lancashire in February 2016. As the youngest Lancashire player to do so he broke Mike Atherton's record by scoring over 1 000 runs in that season.

List A Career Debut

Hameed made his A-list debut in the 2017 Royal London One-Day Cup on April 28 and significantly contributed to Lancashire's triumph. 

In a match between Loughborough MCCU and Marylebone Cricket Club University in April 2019 Hameed scored a double century. Three months after Lancashire stated in August 2019 that Hameed would be released at the end of the season he signed a two-year deal with Nottinghamshire.

International Career

Hameed was selected for the England Test team in September 2016 for their tour of Bangladesh. In the ensuing England tour of India he made his debut.

When Hameed participated in the opening Test match for England against India in Rajkot on November 9 2016 he made history as the nation's youngest debutant to open a Test match.

Hameed became the third-youngest England batsman to achieve 50 runs on November 12 2016 the fourth day of the first Test by scoring his first Test half-century. After a promising debut inning of 31 he was eventually removed for 82. In the second Test he scored 13 runs for England in the first innings and 25 runs in the second. He was out for nine in the first innings of the third Test which England won 283-283. 

He was dismissed in the first innings after breaking his finger but he still managed to hit an undefeated half-century in the second innings while batting at number 8 below his regular opening position. Later it was revealed that he would skip the remainder of the tour in order to travel home for his finger surgery.

Hameed was chosen for the Ashes in 2021–2022.  Hameed scored 25 in the first inning of the first test at the Gabba and 27 in the second inning. After posting subpar run scores in the first four tests he was benched for the fifth.
