Jim Sarbh, born on 27 August 1987, is an Indian stage and film actor. He is best known for his supporting roles in Hindi films for which he has won a Screen Award an International Indian Film Academy Award and been nominated for two Filmfare Awards. Sarbh has also directed and acted in a number of theatre productions in India. Sarbh has frequently appeared in theatre productions particularly those based in Mumbai in addition to his film career.
Sarbh made his feature film debut as the villain in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful biopic Neerja (2016), which earned him excellent reviews from critics as well as nominations for a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Screen Award. He came to notoriety for his antagonistic performances in the historical drama Padmaavat (2018) and the biopic Sanju (2018), both of which were among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. He also appeared in films such as A Death in the Gunj (2017), Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), and Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway (2023). In 2022, he portrayed Dr. Homi Bhabha in the television series Rocket Boys. Sarbh has frequently appeared in stage works, particularly those centred in Mumbai, in addition to his cinema career. He gained notoriety for his roles in the 2013 production of Death of a Salesman, Rajat Kapoor's What's Done is Done, and Kalki Koechlin's Living Room. Bull was his directorial debut in 2014. In 2017, Jim had two Bollywood releases: the thriller A Death in the Gunj and the romance Raabta. The film was shown at a number of film festivals throughout Europe. In Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2018 epic romance Padmaavat, he plays Malik Kafur opposite Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh. In 2019, he appeared in the Netflix film House Arrest, and the following year, he appeared in another Netflix film, Yeh Ballet. In 2020, he starred in Bejoy Nambiar's Taish, which premiered on ZEE5 in October.n In 2022, Jim starred as Amin Faizi in the film Gangubai Kathiawadi, as Homi J. Bhabha in the webseries Rocket Boys, and as a voiceover in the films Eternally Confused and Eager for Love.
Neerja is a 2016 biographical thriller film directed by Ram Madhvani and written by Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh in Hindi. It was co-produced by Atul Kasbekar's Bling Unplugged and Fox Star Studios. The film stars Sonam Kapoor as the eponymous lead with Shekhar Ravjiani Shabana Azmi Yogendra Tiku Kavi Shastri and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.
The plot is based on a true story: the attempted hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi Pakistan on September 5 1986 by the Libyan-backed Abu Nidal Organization. The film is told from the perspective of the flight's head purser Neerja Bhanot who foiled the hijacking attempt by alerting the pilots and thus grounding the plane. Bhanot died while attempting to save the passengers and crew 359 of the 379 on board surviving.
Raabta is a 2017 Indian Hindi-language romantic action thriller film with a humorous twist directed by Dinesh Vijan in his directorial debut and co-produced by Vijan Homi Adajania and Bhushan Kumar.
