Malhotra-directed movie, 31-year-old Junaid plays Karsandas Mulji, a writer and social reformer from the 19th century who is involved in a libel battle against a strong godman. Maharaj Film (2024)

Watch Maharaj | Netflix Official SiteThe 2024 Hindi-language historical drama film Maharaj was produced by YRF Entertainment and directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra. Aamir Khan's son, Junaid Khan, makes his cinematic debut alongside Jaideep Ahlawat, Sharvari, and Shalini Pandey. The Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 and Saurabh Shah's book on it served as the inspiration for the movie.

The Gujarat High Court halted the film's initial release date of June 14, 2024, because a Hindu group argued that it might encourage violence against members of the Hindu sect Pushtimarga Sampradaya. On June 21, 2024, it was eventually made available for Netflix viewing.

Pre-production started in November 2020, and the movie started shooting in February 2021. The production was halted during filming and concluded in October 2023.

Kausar Munir and Sneha Desai wrote the film's lyrics, while Sohail Sen, Alap Desai, Sanchit Balhara, and Ankit Balhara composed the music.

The Gujarat High Court temporarily halted the release of Junaid Khan's (Aamir Khan's son) first movie, Maharaj, on June 13, 2024. This ruling was in response to a petition filed by Pushtimarg sect members who claimed that the movie, which was based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, included offensive and violent material. But after seeing the movie, Justice Sangeeta K. Vishen lifted the stay, claiming that the film was properly certified by the Central Board of Film Certification and did not specifically target the sect. As a result, on June 21, 2024, the movie was made available for Netflix streaming.

For their upcoming movie, Loveyapa, Sridevi-Boney Kapoor's daughter Khushi Kapoor and Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan are slated to collaborate. Loveyapa is the second movie in each of Junaid's and Khushi's careers. The film explores the realm of contemporary romance, featuring a sympathetic plot, lively music, and breathtaking graphics. It is scheduled for release on February 7, 2025, during Valentine's Day week.

Junaid Khan, who debuted as an actor earlier this year in the Netflix movie Maharaj, told reporters that he and Khushi share a number of similarities. The actor was grateful for Khushi's timeliness. He stated, "Khushi and I share many similarities; we are both introverted. She is a kind individual who is consistently punctual.

Phantom Studios and AGS Entertainment support the complex love story Loveyapa, which was directed by Advait Chandan of Laal Singh Chadha and Secret Superstar fame.

Junaid Khan's Controversy

The film "Maharaj," which was based on the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, marked the debut of Aamir Khan's son, Junaid Khan. After the court order was lifted, the contentious movie was made available on Netflix. The Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's son, Junaid Khan, just made his film debut with "Maharaj."

The movie, which was produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF Entertainment and directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, was scheduled to open on Friday, June 14. Following a petition from Vaishnavite Pustimargi sect members, who expressed concerns about possible conflict and the film's distortion of religious beliefs, the decision was made.

The famous Maharaj libel case from 1862 served as the inspiration for Maharaj. The case, which contested religious authority and highlighted the importance of media in social reform, was a landmark court case in Indian history. Through his publication "Satya Prakash," journalist Karsandas Mulji exposed accusations of wrongdoing against a well-known spiritual guru known as "Maharaj."

Karsandas Mulji, who revealed misbehaviour in the Vallabhacharya sect, won a significant victory in the Maharaj libel case. In India, he received accolades for his bravery and was dubbed the "Luther," after Martin Luther King, for opposing religious corruption.

According to news agency PTI, members of the Vaishnavite Pustimargi sect, which is devoted to the god Shree Krishna, objected to the film's plot, which focused on the delicate event. The adherents contended that the movie might incite hostility and misrepresent their religious rituals. Citing possible infractions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, as well as self-regulation guidelines for over-the-top (OTT) platforms, they filed a case in the Gujarat High Court.

In response to the plea, the Gujarat High Court ruled that "Maharaj" should not be released until more hearings were held. The court addressed worries about possible religious sensitivities and emphasised the need to strike a balance between creative freedom and social cohesion. The incident generated discussions on social media, with users dissatisfied with the movie's content using hashtags like "Boycott Netflix." Legal scholars have discussed the persistent conflicts in Indian society between respect for religious beliefs and freedom of expression.

In the end, the High Court overturned the injunction, allowing the movie to be streamed on Netflix on June 21. The court argued that the movie did not specifically target the sect as claimed.
