Northern Districts

Williamson made his professional debut for Northern Districts in 2007 at the age of 17 and he has played all of his domestic cricket in New Zealand with that team.
He achieved his first T20 century on September 19 2014 when he made 101* in 49 balls to lead Northern Districts to a convincing victory against Cape Cobras in the 2014 Champions League Twenty20.

English County Cricket

Williamson committed to playing for Gloucestershire in the 2011 English county campaign. He committed to Yorkshire on August 14 2013 for the remainder of the current campaign and then again on August 14 2014 for the 2014 campaign when his team won the County Championship.

When the current foreign player Aaron Finch was not chosen for the Australia ODI team Yorkshire ultimately decided to extend Finch's contract rather than bring back Williamson for the final few months of the 2015 season. Later he agreed to a contract for a portion of the 2016 season as well as a deal for a portion of the 2018 season.

Kane Williamson: IPL Career

Kane Williamson was purchased by Sunrisers Hyderabad on February 6 2015 for a staggering $96.500. In the 2016 season Williamson took part in the Sunrisers' successful campaign. He continued to work with the team in 2017. Williamson was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 IPL Auction for a whopping US$ 460 500. The next year he was appointed team captain.

The Hyderabad-based team which came second to the Chennai Super Kings under Williamson's captaincy finished in second place. The Sunrisers suffered a defeat by eight wickets on the finals night. For scoring the most runs (735) during the 2018 IPL season Williamson was awarded the coveted Orange Cap.

Williamson led SRH throughout the 2019 season despite David Warner's return to the lineup. The Kiwi captain had a difficult season at the plate managing only 156 runs at 22.28/120 with one 50+ score. In the subsequent season he eventually made way for Warner but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Kane as the relief from the weight of his managerial responsibilities allowed him to pound out 317 runs in 11 innings at a stout 45.28/133.75 with three 50+ scores.Kane returned to guiding the team in the middle of the season after their disastrous start to the 2021 season Warner's poor performance and a ruptured relationship with the top brass.

Before the 2022 auction SRH kept Williamson as one of the three players (for INR 14 crore). But both as a hitter and as a captain he had a miserable season. He only managed 216 runs in 13 innings with an average of 19.64 and a strikeout rate of 93.51. SRH did poorly as well failing to reach the top-4 for the second time in as many seasons.

Kane Williamson's International Career

Kane Williamson: ODI Career

Williamson played his first One-Day International on August 10 2010 against India. However after getting removed on his ninth pitch he was unable to score even a single run. Williamson had hoped for a career to begin with but that was not the case. He was again bowled for a duck in his second game by Angelo Mathews.

Williamson defeated Bangladesh in Dhaka with his first ODI century. Williamson became the youngest century in New Zealand cricket history at the age of just 20. Williamson was chosen for New Zealand's Test squad for the trip to India following his performance on the Bangladesh tour even though New Zealand lost 4-0.

Williamson was selected for New Zealand's squad for the 2011 World Cup despite scoring only 196 runs over 9 innings in 2010. Williamson participated in 4 games and scored 99 runs at a rate of 49.50 runs per game. He had a good 2011 scoring 270 runs in 8 innings but this was followed by another dry spell in 2012 scoring 356 runs in 13 innings at a strikeout rate of 27.38.

When Brendon McCullum succeeded Ross Taylor in 2012 he adopted an overtly aggressive strategy necessitating the need for glue to balance the risks associated with a no holds barred strategy.

Kane proved to be that person for Baz as he and Taylor became the middle-order batting unit's cornerstone for the BlackCaps over the following ten years. Williamson scored many runs in the three seasons between 2013 and 2015 with 2015 being the most fruitful nailing the consistency element previously lacking in his ODI batting.

In the 2013 Champions Trophy he scored the most runs for New Zealand with 101 runs in three innings a performance he repeated in 2017. In addition in January 2014 Kane hit five consecutive half-centuries against the visiting Indian squad to help the BlackCaps secure a 4-0 series victory. In total he scored 770 runs in his 12 innings of batting that year including 8 50+ scores and a 100.

Williamson's achievements in 2015 elevated him to the top of the ODI batting order despite his World Cup performance falling short of expectations. Apart from a spectacular finale against Australia in that dramatic group-stage match at Eden Park Kane only managed 234 runs in nine innings with a strikeout rate of 33.42.

After the quadrennial competition he rediscovered his form though and went on a scorching run that saw him accumulate six such totals against England and Zimbabwe in June–August 2015. He scored 1376 runs overall in 26 innings at a batting average of 57.33 with 9 50s and 3 100s.

Following McCullum's retirement in 2016 Williamson was named captain of the New Zealand squad and excelled in that role. For Kane—the ODI batsman and captain—2019 has always been a turning point year. He reached his peak as a batter leading a struggling batting lineup to the World Cup championship game.

Kane will always look back on 2019 with bittersweet memories as a player and as a leader because the BlackCaps fell short of winning the championship without dropping the championship game.

He scored 578 runs in 9 innings at 82.57/74.96 and was named Player of the Tournament but his most memorable picture from that World Cup will be of a broken man who was making a valiant effort to hide his pain by wearing a grin. Kane scored 6 000 runs in ODIs during the campaign doing so faster than any New Zealander and third globally (139 innings).

Williamson improved his reputation as a legend by handling the disappointment of coming in last and violating the boundary countback rule. Due to a combination of the global pandemics his hectic schedule and his problematic elbow Williamson has only played in 6 ODIs since the 2019 World Cup.

Kane Williamson: Test Career

Williamson played his first Test match against India in Ahmedabad on November 4 2010. He became the eighth New Zealand player to make a century in his first Test match when he made 131 runs off 299 balls in the first innings.

Williamson recorded his second test century of the series with a magnificent 161 against the West Indies in June 2014. Williamson was essential to New Zealand's unusual success in a test series away from home. Williamson scored the most runs overall in that series with 413 including a double century that was prevented by rain. Williamson was cleared in December 2014 after being cleared of a questionable bowling action in April 2014.

Williamson became the twelfth batter to hit a century against every other Test-playing nation in August 2016 when he made a century against Zimbabwe in the ongoing Test series. Williamson became the youngest player to earn this record after accomplishing it in the fewest number of innings and the shortest amount of time after his Test debut.

With a total of 18 hundred as of March 23 2018 Williamson became the player for New Zealand with the most centuries in Test matches. Williamson was one of 20 players given a new contract by New Zealand Cricket in May 2018 for the 2018–19 season in recognition of his outstanding performances. Williamson crossed the 900 rating point threshold in the ICC Test batting rankings on December 7th 2018 becoming the first cricketer from New Zealand to do so.

Williamson started a hot streak that lasted the next four seasons and culminated in his game-winning innings against India in the 2021 World Test Championship final.Throughout 2018–21 the right-handed batter was a force at the plate both at home and in the UAE. In addition to his 1434 runs in 13 home Test matches at an average of 89.62 he also contributed 386 runs in three games against Pakistan in the UAE which enabled his team to win a rare international series.

Williamson scored his fourth double-hundred (238 against Pakistan) in January 2021 becoming the nation's fastest player to reach 7 000 Test runs (in 143 innings). During a Test match against Bangladesh in Hamilton in 2019 Kane amassed 6 000 runs in 126 innings making him the New Zealander who had done it the fastest.
Kane struggled during New Zealand's 3-0 thrashing by Australia during their 2019 tour. During the first World T20 cycle in which the BlackCaps placed second in the points table he made the sole mistake as captain and hitter.

Williamson led New Zealand to the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for the first time (in 2021) but it was at the Ageas Bowl in June 2021 when they defeated India in the championship match to win the coveted Test trophy that they truly reached their peak.
On a very challenging pitch Williamson scored 49 and 52* points which ultimately separated the two teams.

Williamson and New Zealand have struggled in the 2021–23 cycle after the euphoria of the WTC victory. Due to tennis elbow difficulties Kane was sidelined for the entirety of New Zealand's home summer of 2021–2022 and without him the Kiwis lost their series with Bangladesh and South Africa. The reigning champions had previously suffered a 0-1 defeat in India.

Kane made a comeback for the three-game series in England in June 2022 but both he (96 runs in 4 innings) and the BlackCaps failed miserably against an outclassed English team which went on to shoot down 250+ targets in three separate 4th innings.

Williamson's average in England dropped to 25.50 highlighting once more his problems defending against quality attacks in difficult circumstances. His averages in South Africa and India are 21.16 runs in four innings and 33.53 runs in eight innings respectively while Sri Lanka's equivalent numbers are 26.71 runs in four innings (187 runs in four innings).

He did have batting averages of 42.84 (557 runs in 7 innings) in Australia and 51.33 (462 runs in 5 innings) in the West Indies. In addition he was crucial to New Zealand's series victory over Pakistan in the UAE in 2018.The next trip to Pakistan will give Kane a chance to improve his test statistics in Asia and continue his outstanding performance in Pakistan a team he has averaged 59.14 in 12 games.

Kane Williamson: T20I Career

On October 16 2011 against Zimbabwe Williamson played in his first T20 international match. The BlackCaps fell to England in the semifinals of the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup while he was New Zealand's captain.

Williamson eventually reached a 48-ball 85 with the help of 10 fours and three sixes.

However it turned out to be insufficient as the Australians easily dispatched the remaining 173 to deprive New Zealand of its first World Cup victory.Kane hopes to exact revenge on the defending champions when the 2021 T20 World Cup finalists square off at the SCG on October 22. A year later Kane is in Australia to lead the BlackCaps in another T20 World Cup.

Kane Williamson: Captaincy

For the ODI and Twenty20 series against Pakistan in 2014 a youthful Kane Williamson was selected as captain because Brendon McCullum was resting up for the trip. Williamson became the captain of New Zealand in all forms of cricket in March 2016 after Brendon McCullum retired. At the World T20I Cup in India he was named captain. At the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Williamson also led New Zealand to a runner-up finish.

Under Kane New Zealand's Test team went from being a 'dark horse' to an ominous group in comfortable circumstances. The BlackCaps defeated everyone at home. By doing so they overtook India to become the No. 1 ranked team and the World T20 champions after defeating Virat Kohli's team in a rain-affected six-day final in Southampton in 2021.
