Silk Route was founded by Chauhan Kem Trivedi Atul Mittal and Kenny Puri. Chauhan sang Kem played keyboards Atul Mittal played lead guitar and Kenny Puri performed the drums. The hit songs Dooba Dooba and Pehchan were on their debut album Boondein which was released in 1998. In 2000 the second album was made available. He released another album called Fitoor in 2009 after Silk Route was canceled in 2008.

In 2002 Chauhan sang Pehli Nazar Mein Dari Thi from the movie Road which marked the start of his career as a cinema singer. His two most well-known songs are Khoon Chala from Rang De Basanti and Tum Se Hi from Jab We Met. He got the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2008.

When Imtiaz Ali and A R Rahman reunited with Chauhan for the soundtrack of Rockstar in 2011 he experienced his biggest rise to national notoriety. Mohit Chauhan a well-known playback singer who was scheduled to perform in the US is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with a US-based event management business that has accused him of contract breach. After he was accused of canceling concerts three times the business ProMarcom Inc. allegedly claimed compensation in the amount of $50 000 USD (about Rs. 3.18 crore).

However Tanniru noted that Prarthana Mohit's manager and wife had asked for a raise in the daily allowance and a copy of the contract just before the team's November travel to the US. Despite Tanniru's assurances that these issues will be resolved when the crew reaches the United States she stated that Prarthana wouldn't budge thus they were forced to postpone the concert incurring a loss of Rs. 48 lakhs that had been paid to Mohit as the performance fee. Padma claimed that they have spent the last nine months attempting to contact Mohit because they claim he has not returned their calls or messages.

Mohit Chauhan's team on the other side has been certain that these are untrue accusations made with the goal to harm the singer's reputation in public and that they did comply with the contract but that the firm was the one that didn't fulfill the conditions. They also claimed that they had lost money since they were unable to host any additional events as a result.

• He was born into a Rajput family in the small Himachal Pradeshi town of Nahan in the Sirmaur district (a hill state in India).
• He became interested in music when he was young.
