Noel Tata started working for Tata International the division of the Tata Group responsible for exporting goods and services. He was appointed managing director of Trent the retail division of the Group that his mother founded in June 1999. Trent had already purchased Littlewoods International and renamed it Westside by this point. Tata expanded Westside making it a successful business. He was named director of Titan Industries and Voltas in 2003.

It was rumoured that Tata was being groomed to succeed Ratan Tata as the leader of the Tata Group when it was revealed in 2010–2011 that he would become managing director of Tata International the business responsible for the $70 billion conglomerate's worldwide operations. 

Ratan Tata's replacement Cyrus Mistry was nevertheless announced as of 2011. Ratan Tata succeeded Cyrus Mistry as chairman of Tata Sons in October 2016 serving in that position for four months until February 2017. In February 2019 he was appointed to the board of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust after being named vice chairman of the Titan Company in 2018. He was appointed vice chairman of on March 29 2022.
