Saina Nehwal began playing badminton at the age of eight after her family relocated from Haryana to Hyderabad. Her introduction to the game was primarily motivated by the fact that she didn't speak the local language well and wanted to fulfil her mother's dream of becoming a state-level badminton player herself. The Indian shuttler accomplished this by representing India at the highest level at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Saina's first success came in 2002 when she won the Sub-Junior National title in the U-13 category. She won the Junior National title in 2004 and the Senior National title three years later. Saina has 14 National singles and doubles titles at the Sub-Junior Junior and Senior levels.

She won her first international title in 2005 when she won the Asian Satellite Badminton Tournament in India. She won her first India Grand Prix title in 2009 defeating compatriot Aditi Mutatkar. Saina finished third at the World Badminton Championships in 2017. She won two gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland in Women's Singles and Mixed Team. She won a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta in September. Saina Nehwal has set her sights on qualifying for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as she needs to be in the top 16 to compete.
