Their true love story differs little from what Mahendra Singh Dhoni's biopic depicted. They did meet at the hotel as depicted in the movie but the management and their mutual friend Yudhajit Dutta introduced them.

Due to the fact that Sakshi's internship was coming to an end Dutta had planned a farewell celebration. Dutta invited Dhoni to the party beforehand which is how they initially connected. Dutta gave her contact to Dhoni who then began texting her. Sakshi originally ignored the messages because she assumed they were a joke from one of her friends but when she learned the truth she was utterly astounded.

In March 2008 they finally took the next step into a romantic relationship. The same year Sakshi attended his birthday celebration. Dhoni drove her back to her house to make up for the time he could not spend with her due to his obsession with friends. They secretly maintained their courtship while simultaneously fully enjoying it. 

Afterwards they made the decision to wed after obtaining the approval of their respective family members. The ceremony for the engagement took place on July 3 2010 at the Hotel Competent in Dehradun. Two days later at the "Vishranti Resort" outside of Dehradun they were married. In February 2015 the couple welcomed their daughter Ziva.

Sakshi Dhoni was caught in the IPL match-fixing incident. A photo of her seated next to Vindoo Dara Singh during an IPL game started circulating after the match-fixing scandal involving the league was revealed. Vindoo's involvement in match-fixing was being investigated by the authorities. However no wrongdoing was found in relation to Sakshi hence her name was cleared.
