Zaira Wasim is an Indian former actress who appeared in Hindi films Wasim has received many honours including a Filmfare Award and a National Film Award. In 2017 she was given the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (formerly known as the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement).
Wasim made her acting debut as young Geeta Phogat in the 2016 biographical sports film Dangal which became the highest-grossing Indian movie with a worldwide take of more than 2 000 crores ($300 million). The musical drama Secret Superstar (2017) the highest-grossing Indian movie with a female lead featured her as an aspiring singer.
Both were supported by Aamir Khan Productions and she received many honours for them including the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the former and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for the latter. Her most recent film role was in The Sky Is Pink (2019) for which she was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The 2016 Hindi biographical sports drama film Dangal directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Aamir Khan Kiran Rao and Siddharth Roy Kapur and distributed by The Walt Disney Company India. Khan plays Mahavir Singh Phogat in the movie a Bhawani amateur wrestler who trains his daughter Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari into India's first elite female wrestlers.
All of the actors except Tanwar and Sahore who are making their film debuts play the adult versions of the two Phogat sisters Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar's younger selves Sakshi Tanwar's role as their mother and Aparshakti Khurana's adult version of their cousin Ritvik Sahore.
When Tiwari started writing the script in early 2013 the movie's production got underway. Before Tiwari approached him with the idea months later Khan had interviewed the Phogat sisters on his chat show Satyamev Jayate in 2014. Additionally it was shown at the second BRICS festival in June 2017 and the Beijing International Film Festival in April 2017. Four honours were given to it at the 62nd Filmfare Awards: Best Film Best Director Best Actor (Khan) and Best Action (Shyam). Wasim won Best Supporting Actress at the 64th National Film Awards for her portrayal of Geeta's younger self. Dangal was a commercial success breaking multiple records at the box office including the highest-grossing Indian film.
Secret Superstar the 2017 Hindi-language musical drama film was written and directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. Raj Arjun Meher Vij Zaira Wasim and Aamir Khan all appear in the movie. The movie chronicles the maturation of a young woman who wants to be a singer and posts videos of herself singing on YouTube while hiding her identity with a niqab. It also explores her relationships with her mother father and mentor.
In the movie social themes including feminism gender equality and domestic abuse are discussed. The majority of critics gave the movie favourable reviews. The National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement went to Wasim. Ten actors were nominated for the 63rd Filmfare Awards including Best Supporting Actor for Khan Best Director for Chandan Best Actress for Wasim and Best Film for Secret Superstar.
It received three Filmfare Awards including Best Playback Singer (Female) for Meghna Mishra Best Supporting Actress (Critics) for Vij and Best Actress (Critics) for Wasim.
With a worldwide gross of $965 crore ($154 million) on a modest budget of 15 crores (US$2.3 million) Secret Superstar became one of the most financially successful movies of all time.
The Sky Is Pink is a 2019 Hindi-language biographical romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Shonali Bose. It was co-produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur under their respective production companies Purple Pebble Pictures RSVP Movies and Roy Kapur Films.
Based on the true story of Aisha Chaudhary who had severe combined immunodeficiency and pulmonary fibrosis the movie stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas Farhan Akhtar Zaira Wasim and Rohit Suresh Saraf. It depicts how her parents Aditi and Niren deal with their marriage while caring for their daughter's illness.
Pritam created the soundtrack for the movie and Gulzar provided the words to the songs. The movie examines issues like motherhood grief and the impact of losing a child on relationships especially on the connection between the parents as well as death and accepting it.
The movie had its global premiere on September 13 at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival and went wide on October 11 of the same year. Positive reviews of The Sky Pink praised Bose's screenplay directing and cast members' performances.
Although it cost 24 crores it only made 34.41 crores at the box office hence it did poorly financially. The Sky Is Pink received three nominations for the 65th Filmfare Awards: Best Film (Critics) Best Actress (Chopra Jonas) and Best Supporting Actress (Wasim).
Zaira Wasim left the Bollywood industry post her film The Sky is Pink in 2019. She stated her reasoning and understanding before taking a step like that. Wasim said that her working as an actress has affected her religious beliefs and has created conflicts with her culture. In 2020 Zaira requested her fans to take down all her pictures from the internet as she was beginning a new chapter in her life.
Zaira's debut film sparked the first issue when in 2016 a photo from the scene went viral. Due to Zaira Wasim's short hair in this photo extremist Muslim groups singled her out and referred to her short hairstyle as being un-Islamic.
Soon later in 2017 when a photo of Zaira with Mehbooba Mufti the chief minister of Kashmir appeared she came under fire. Zaira was praised by Mufti as a Kashmiri role model.
People who adhered to some radical ideologies did not enjoy this issue and Zaira was also threatened in a number of ways. Zaira deleted the post in addition to her apology after noticing that the situation was intensifying.
