Action films have always been able to captivate spectators in the fast-paced world of cinema thanks to the heart-pounding sequences and larger-than-life heroes that they feature.

When it was released in theatres in 2022, An Action Hero, an engrossing and high-octane thriller, kept viewers on the edge of their seats and was one of the most thrilling additions to the action film genre.

Anirudh Iyer, making his directorial debut with this film, is also the film's producer alongside T-Series Films and Colour Yellow Productions. It follows an action film star, played by Ayushmann Khurrana, as he goes on the run after accidently killing another person.

During filming in Haryana, the powerful politician Vikram Solanki, who is running for office, had the idea of meeting Maanav, a prominent action hero, in order to get exposure for his campaign. But before he could meet him, Maanav changed his route to go to his new Ford Mustang and went for a ride.

This was a blow to Vicky's pride, so he followed him. During the conflict, Maanav is seen pushing Vicky to the ground, and the latter ultimately succumbs to his injuries after being struck by a jagged rock.

In an effort to get away from everything, Maanav runs away to London, but Vicky's brother Bhoora swears to kill him and follows him there.

Meanwhile, Maanav is criticised all over the place on various news networks. In London, life for Maanav becomes a living hell since, on the one hand, the London police are looking for him and, on the other, Bhoora wants Maanav dead no matter what it takes. 

Release

T-Series uploaded a trailer of their film, An Action Hero, on their YouTube channel. On December 2nd, 2022, the movie was released in theatres all around the world. Netflix was able to obtain the digital rights, and the movie was made available on January 27th, 2023. 

Review

This is Anirudh Iyer's first directorial effort, and it examines the celebrity culture as well as the fleeting nature of fame. The idea that famous people are susceptible to criticism from the general population and scrutiny from the media serves as the primary focus of this fast-paced drama that lasts 132 minutes. The plot of An Action Hero appears to be a straightforward tale of retribution at first glance; nevertheless, the screenplay twists the story into a perverse account of a famous person who finds himself in an unusual circumstance. Iyer, who wrote the screenplay for the movie along with Neeraj Yadav, has a firm grasp on the story for the most part, which is impressive given the film's enticing premise.

Iyer takes more time than necessary to establish the plot, and as a result, the majority of the first half is devoted to doing so. The second half of the movie, on the other hand, picks up the pace and turns into an all-out action movie with various components that keep you captivated. The problem with the movie is all of the random individuals who are introduced during it that don't really contribute much to the drama but do add more time to the movie.

The dosage of oomph quotient is brought in by Nora Fatehi and Malaika Arora's dance numbers to reprised renditions of 'Jehda Nasha' and 'Aap Jaisa Koi,' respectively. The score in the background provides a contrast to the unfolding events and helps to set the mood for the movie.

Even if not everything in the plot makes sense and you find yourself wishing the movie was more concise, it does contain a decent amount of action and humour that is supported by strong acting. The plot of An Action Hero is not nearly as exciting as watching Ayushmann Khurrana transform himself into an action hero and flex his muscles (quite literally) on screen. This is the most entertaining aspect of the film.

Character Analysis

Ayushmann Khurrana as Maanav Khuranna

Ayushmann Khurrana, a great actor, plays the pivotal role of Maanav in the movie An Action Hero. Maanav is an important character in the story. His part in the story lends depth and complexity to the plot, which in turn contributes to the progression of the narrative as a whole. It is revealed that Maanav is a talented stuntman who devotes a lot of his time to his career in the film industry. He has a profound appreciation for the craft in addition to a fervent interest in the action. He has become an individual who is courageous and driven because to the experience he has gained through executing daring acts.

Ayushmann is given a great deal of freedom to fully inhabit the multi-faceted character of Maanav, who is a confident, flamboyant, and strong personality in his role as an actor, but who is also fragile when fate forces him to live the life of an ordinary guy in order to preserve his life. He puts forth a lot of effort to ensure that Maanav's persona is appealing. However, his contribution goes beyond the realm of merely possessing impressive physical abilities.

Jaideep Ahlawat as Bhoora Singh Solanki

The way that Jaideep performs, as well as his Haryanvi dialect, is spot on. His character isn't very well developed, but he delivers some of the most hilarious seeti-maar punches throughout the movie. There is a good balance of comedy and action, and there are several memorable lines of conversation that will make you laugh out loud.

The presence of such a powerful foe as Bhoora Singh Solanki in the narrative lends both depth and drama to the events that transpire.

In the movie An Action Hero, the antagonist Bhoora Singh Solanki is a charismatic and menacing figure. He establishes himself as a formidable foe for the protagonist of the movie by virtue of his clever intelligence, unrelenting pursuit of power, and terrifying demeanour. Because of the layered nature of the character and the actor's portrayal of him, Bhoora Singh Solanki is an integral part of the compelling narrative that the film presents.

The film An Action Hero did not perform well on the box office with opening collection of Rs. 1.31 crore. The worldwide collection of the movie was just Rs. 12.96 crore. 

Awards

In addition to being loaded with pointless action, the plot of the movie also has numerous abrupt changes in location and context, as well as the introduction of characters for no reason. This can leave you feeling confused about what actually took place. The satire in An Action Hero places a significant amount of emphasis on the almost psychosocial relationship that fans have with celebrities, which, in the worst possible scenarios, can develop into an entitlement to the celebrities' time and space.
