Atrangi Re, which means a person of eight colors, is an Indian Hindi-language love fantasy comedy-drama film that will be directed by Aanand L. Rai and written by Himanshu Sharma. The movie has came out in 2021. The movie stars Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan, and Akshay Kumar. It was made by T-Series Films, Colour Yellow Productions, and Cape of Good Films. A girl named Rinku falls in love with an artist named Sajjad. This is the story of the movie. She has to marry Dr. Vishu against her will. Vishu soon falls in love with Rinku, but when Sajjad comes into the picture, things get even stranger.
Rai came up with the idea for the movie in 2013, after Raanjhanaa came out. He worked with Sharma to write the screenplay, which was about how complicated human feelings, especially love, can be. He was sure to cast Dhanush because the subject, script, and time were all similar, but he didn't know who would play the other roles. Since the project was officially announced at the end of January 2020, shooting began in March 2020 and ended in March 2021, even though six months of filming were lost because of the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The movie was filmed in Varanasi, parts of Bihar, Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, and in Madurai and Karaikudi for a few scenes. The score and album of music from the movie were made by A. R. Rahman, and Irshad Kamil wrote the words. Pankaj Kumar and Hemal Kothari were in charge of filming and cutting, respectively.
Due to the pandemic, the film's release dates had to be moved around several times. On December 24, 2021, the film's makers showed it for the first time on Disney+ Hotstar instead of in theatres, skipping the whole cinema release process. It was also called Galatta Kalyanam when it came out in Tamil. Critics gave the movie mixed to positive reviews. They liked the unusual plot, the performances of the main actors, the direction, the soundtrack, and the score, but they didn't like the confusing script or how the overall story was told.

Rinku Suryavanshi is chased by her family thugs at Siwan Junction railway station while trying to elope with her longtime boyfriend. Her grandma Dulhayen beats her and forces her to marry any bachelor to get Rinku away. Rinku's aunt offers her drugged Kheer for her parent's death anniversary the next day.
S. Venkatesh Vishwanath Vishu Iyer, a doctor momentarily visiting his friend Madhusudan MS, a psychiatrist, is kidnapped and drugged by Rinku's uncles, who were after MS, and forced to marry. Vishu will be engaged to his buddy Mandakini Mandy in two days, while Rinku's boyfriend, performing artist and magician Sajjad Ali Khan, will be in Delhi in a week. Rinku recounts to Vishu how Dulhayen's plan caused her parents' immolation during their day in a dormitory. The two arrive in Madurai for Vishu's wedding, but Mandy watches a popular video of their forced marriage and calls off the wedding. Vishu violently berates Mandy's father for mistreating Rinku and leaves.
Vishu comes to Delhi with Rinku, angry and sorrowful, realising he loves her. Rinku hurries off to greet Sajjad. Vishu sends MS to make sure Rinku goes safely, but Sajjad is imaginary and Rinku is mentally sick, conversing and eloping with a nonexistent person. Bewildered by this, MS speculates that Sajjad maybe someone from Rinku's youth, and Rinku's increasing love for Vishu makes her feel guilty because she has loved Sajjad for years and if she loves Vishu, Sajjad won't exist. He runs to Vishu in the operating room and informs him about Sajjad, then they leave to get Rinku. Vishu stops Rinku on a train by saying he must divorce before going. Vishu quickly assumes Rinku's love tale is about her parents.
MS believes that as Rinku gets better, Sajjad will get sicker, so Vishu and MS medicate Rinku to drive him away. Sajjad witnesses inebriated Rinku kiss Vishu on the cheek. Rinku is told to ask Vishu what makes him unique. In vengeance, Vishu breaks bottles on his head and is brought to the ER. Sajjad apologises by destroying the Taj Mahal. Vishu and his buddies gather people, but MS gives Rinku her prescription and she realises Sajjad's magic trick failed. She asks Vishu at night why everyone was clapping despite the Taj Mahal's presence. Frustrated, Vishu admits his love for Rinku and says he must support her as his wife.
Rinku's passion for Vishu scares Sajjad into suicide. Doctors MS and Vishu operate on Sajjad. MS suggests telling Rinku that Sajjad died on the surgery table, but Vishu refuses. Rinku refuses to divorce the following day, saying she wants Sajjad and Vishu. Vishu sends her to Delhi Junction railway station to meet Sajjad, who is going to Japan for a play, so she can see Sajjad where she wants. He says he will wait for her at the station till dark so she can elope with Sajjad or change her mind and return to him.
Rinku sees Sajjad with a young Rinku at the station. He tells her to go to Vishu, her soulmate, and that he would never return. Rinku sobs remembering her childhood. A flashback reveals that Sajjad is her father, who ran away with Manjari, married, and had Rinku. The Suryavanshis sued and detained Sajjad. Rinku and Manjari were forced home. After prison, Sajjad joined the circus. Manjari covertly attended his gigs with Rinku.
The Suryavanshis changed the artificial fuel with real gasoline before Sajjad's firewalking performance, immolating him. Manjari runs to save Sajjad, but they both perish in front of Rinku. Vishu and MS realised this forms her paracosm with Sajjad into adulthood, so they played along. After Sajjad goes, Rinku runs back to Vishu, who was giving out sweets, to tell him his wife has returned. After reconciling, Vishu carries Rinku like Sajjad would a young Rinku.
According to the film's official announcement, it was scheduled for a Valentine's Day 2021 theatrical release. Himanshu Sharma pitched the script to Rai during Tanu Weds Manu: Returns (2015), but Rai moved on to other projects. It comes from just one thing that is you are willing to fall in love, Rai said of the script he revived after Zero (2018). Love scares us because it hurts. Eliminating that fear will help you comprehend others and their feelings. I've met people who share their emotions freely.
When Atrangi Re was discussed as an idea in 2014, Rai stated that only Dhanush was certain, the rest of the casting happened gradually, Rai said. Rai requested Dhanush to change colours for Vishu. Raanjhanaa was about redemption; Atrangi Re is about a different sort of love. There are people who like to be silent and you don’t know them at all, but then there are people like the character Vishu who are quiet, but you still understand them, he said of the very layered role. The director and writer attracted me to the project, Dhanush told Firstpost. Rai sought to give Vishu my crazy. Rai described Rinku's design as beautiful, restless, and innocent. Khan's age was advantageous because the part required somebody young and fresh, without baggage.
The film was announced as Atrangi Re on 30 January 2020. Himanshu Sharma wrote the screenplay after Dhanush, Khan, and Kumar were cast.A. R. Rahman composed the film's music and background score, and Irshad Kamil wrote the lyrics.Rai's second film with Rahman, Himanshu, and Kamil followed Raanjhanaa.
Rai said the film's storyline is genre-less. All three characters are funny and it’s their emotional journey, he said. All three of them share my emotional connection to the story. Every character in this film has traits that place them in an invisible space. Rai set the film in Bihar and Madurai to be an amalgamation of two Indian cultures. Salman Khan registered the title under his production business and offered it to Rai on the condition that Rai direct the film. He thanked Khan for relinquishing the title.
A. R. Rahman wrote Atrangi Re's music and film score, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil. Rahman claimed he based the soundtrack on the lead actors' on-screen and off-screen personalities. He picked Rai's music and score to bring villages to life and provide an international perspective. He composed folk-classical tunes for the film. The film's music depicts the characters' emotions as they travel around India.
Before T-Series published the seven-song soundtrack album on 6 December 2021, Chaka Chak and Rait Zara Si were released as singles. The cast and crew attended a Mumbai promotional launch event where Rahman and his team performed. Financial Express called the soundtrack heart-touching music rendered by veteran music composer A. R. Rahman after numerous rave reviews. Rahman received Best Music Director and Best Background Score IIFA Awards.
