Plot

Bebaak, grounded in a real-life story, tackles the patriarchal concept of men exerting control over women's bodies, a presumption built on certain theological constructs that compel women to veil themselves to be considered 'more modest, respectful, and acceptable' by society. It unfurls the narrative of Fatin, a financially disadvantaged young woman who confronts blatant misogyny and reproach from a religious authority in the course of a scholarship conversation.

Review

Bebaak short film scene

Bebaak is a poignant film written and directed by Shazia Iqbal that presents a stark exploration of identity, freedom, and gender norms within a religious context. At the center of this narrative is Sarah Hashmi's character, Fatin Khalidi, a struggling architecture student. Hashmi delivers an impactful performance, capturing Fatin's internal conflict of navigating her religious identity in an orthodox neighbourhood with sensitivity and depth.

Iqbal's direction excellently captures the constricting orthodox atmosphere, focusing on the stifling spaces the characters occupy - both physically and metaphorically. The story also highlights Fatin's parents, played admirably by Sheeba Chadda and Vipin Sharma, who embody individuals caught in the struggle of balancing tradition with their progressive values.

The writing is compelling, illustrating Fatin's journey and the internal turmoil she faces, alongside the societal pressures and traditionally held views expressed by the cleric, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Siddiqui's portrayal of the narrow-minded, sexist Niyaz is masterful, grounding his character's biases in an ordinariness that makes him an everyman woman comes across in their daily lives.

There are no significant animations or graphics in the film to take note of; however, the simple yet powerful editing technique amplifies the narrative's elements effectively.

Bebaak is a slowly paced film, meant to linger and allow the audiences to soak in the intensity of the circumstances and characters. This pacing is apt for the story it tells, providing ample room for the narrative's essence to unravel itself in detail.

The film, though confronting, will resonate with an audience open to thought-provoking narratives that challenge societal norms and expectations. It's a film that speaks volumes about the pressures of tradition and the quest for individual freedom. It's particularly recommended for those who appreciate films exploring societal issues, identity crises, and nuanced representations of religious and gender inequalities.
