The movie opens with Shirin (Sai Tamhankar), a grandmother with a hint of grey, traveling to Pune with her son Pritam (Sushant Shelar) and their grandkids. Insight into the time period is provided by the men's bell-bottom trousers and the women's polka-dot gowns and 'Asha Parekh' salwar kameezes, both of which date to the late 1970s.
Nothing is explained explicitly; rather, the story centered on Shreyas Talwalkar (Swapnil Joshi) reveals each character and their significance in the tale as it unfolds. His mother insists that he attend college, so he is shipped out to Pune immediately. Shreyas befriends DSP aka Digya (Ankush Choudhary) and his Katta gang in a setting evocative of 1980s Hindi cinema depictions of college life. Shreyas is the man who speaks for the group when the sinister Saai (Jitendra Joshi) threatens their friendship.
There is a love triangle since he is interested to Shirin but Meenu (Urmila Kanetkar) is attracted to Shreyas. Shirin is the younger sister of Pritam and a current medical school student. An MLA from Kolhapur, and his children, including Shirin, whom he despises. While Shreyas is uncertain about his future with Meenu, he accepts her proposal out of hatred for Shirin, who has consistently rejected his advances.
Saai arranges his marriage to Shirin, despite her objections. Shreyas's feelings for Shirin are reciprocated, as Meenu eventually learns. Shreyas and his pals get into it with Sai and his crew on the day of the wedding of Saai and Shirin. Shirin and Shreyas tie the knot at last. She knows that Shreyas has a terminal illness (likely blood cancer) and that he only has a matter of months to live. They're getting ready to start a family.
At the end of the film, on Shreyas's birthday, all of his college pals, who are now in their early 50s, reunite at the same katta to share their appreciation for him.
Outside of Maharashtra, Duniyadari was released and met with critical and commercial success in places like Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, etc. More than 5,000 showings every week in over 270 theatres contributed to the film's record-breaking daily average of 710 showings.
The film's critical reception has been overwhelmingly favourable. In the history of the Marathi film industry, Duniyadari is considered to be the most commercially successful film ever made. ABP Majha, a Marathi news station, praised the film for its story, direction, and outstanding acting of all of the actors by awarding it four out of a possible five stars.
