Its 68-year history covers 1941 to 2009. It is regarded as one of the best Indian films ever produced.

Both parts were initially shot as a single film totaling 321 minutes and screened at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight, but no Indian theatre would offer to screen a five-hour film, so they were separated. Both parts were originally filmed as a single 321-minute film and screened at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight, but because no Indian theatre would offer to show a film longer than five hours, it was split into two parts for that market. Both films were critically acclaimed and commercially profitable. The Guardian ranked it 59th among the 100 best movies of the twenty-first century in 2019.

 gang of wasseypur

'Gangs of Wasseypur' is an Indian crime thriller film directed by Anurag Kashyap. The plot revolves around the coal mafia of Wasseypur, a small town in the state of Jharkhand.

The film is divided into two parts and spans several decades. The story begins with Shahid Khan, a young man who smuggles coal for a living. He is betrayed by his friend, Ramadhir Singh, and is killed by him. This sets off a cycle of revenge that spans generations.

Shahid's son, Sardar Khan, vows to avenge his father's death and becomes a gangster himself. He forms his own gang and engages in a violent turf war with Ramadhir Singh's gang. Sardar also has a personal vendetta against Singh, as he blames him for his father's death.

The story follows the violent and bloody conflict between the two gangs, as they fight for control over the lucrative coal mines of Wasseypur. Along the way, the film explores themes of power, corruption, and revenge.

The second part of the film takes place several years after the events of the first part. Sardar Khan's sons are now grown up and have taken over the family business. They continue the fight against Ramadhir Singh's gang, but also face new challenges from rival gangs and political forces.

The film culminates in a final, epic showdown between the two gangs. The violence and bloodshed come to a head, as the characters face the consequences of their actions.

Overall, 'Gangs of Wasseypur' is a gritty and realistic portrayal of the criminal underworld in India. It is a tale of revenge, loyalty, and betrayal, and explores the complex relationships between individuals and their families, friends, and enemies.

Review

According to the website Rotten Tomatoes, the picture has a 97% approval rating based on 31 reviews, with an average score of 8.2/10. 'More than five hours go by in a blink in this frantic Indian crime epic that spans generations and encompasses hundreds of characters in a bloody spiral of brutality, all masterfully filmed by Anurag Kashyap,' say the website's critics. The film has a Metacritic score of 89 out of 10, signifying 'universal acclaim.'

According to RogerEbert.com critic Danny Bowes, it is 'One of the most ambitious gangster films ever made, and quite possibly one of the best,' and is 'worthy of discussion alongside Coppola's first two Godfather films, or Leone's Once Upon a Time in America.'

'As a rich and exuberant character-driven crime saga in an idiom you have absolutely never encountered before, and a dense, unsentimental portrayal of the collision between democracy, capitalism, and gangsterism on the frayed margins of the post-colonial world, Gangs of Wasseypur is a signal achievement in 21st-century cinema,' wrote Salon's Andrew O'Hehir. Martin Scorsese, one of Kashyap's film influences and personal heroes, wrote Kashyap a letter of praise, stating that he 'loved them' and even expressing a wish to collaborate.
