 Introduction 

Singham is a 2011 action film directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Reliance Entertainment. Yunus Sajawal and Farhad-Sajid wrote the script. It is the first entry in Shetty's Cop Universe. The film is a remake of Hari's 2010 Tamil film of the same name. The film stars Ajay Devgn as Bajirao Singham, a police officer, alongside Kajal Aggarwal and Prakash Raj, who reprises his role from the original. It was released theatrically in India on July 22, 2011 with a strong box office response. After the film's success, Devgn and Shetty collaborated on the sequel Singham Returns (2014).

Plot 

Singham is a 2011 Indian action film directed by Rohit Shetty. The film features Ajay Devgn in the lead role of Bajirao Singham, a police officer in a small village named Shivgad. The story follows Singham as he clashes with a powerful criminal politician named Jaikant Shikre, played by Prakash Raj. The film begins with Singham working as an honest and sincere police officer in Shivgad. He lives with his mother and younger sister, Kavya, a medical student. Singham's life turns when he meets Jaikant Shikre, a corrupt politician who runs a criminal empire in Goa.

Jaikant Shikre sets his sights on Shivgad and its residents, forcing Singham to take action against him. Singham initially tries to fight corruption through legal means, but he realises that the system is rigged against him. He then decides to take matters into his own hands and goes after Jaikant Shikre and his gang. Singham's relentless pursuit of justice leads him to clash with Jaikant Shikre and his men in several action-packed sequences. Singham's bravery and determination inspire the people of Shivgad to stand up against the corrupt politician and his goons. Ultimately, Singham emerges victorious, and Jaikant Shikre is brought to justice. Singham's heroism and dedication to his duty earned him the respect and admiration of the people of Shivgad. The film ends with Singham continuing to fight against corruption and serving his community as a police officer.

Release

Singham was released on July 22, 2011, by Reliance Entertainment on 2000 screens globally with 1500 prints, excluding overseas. The DVD for the film was published on August 23, 2011. On Reliance Entertainment's request, the Delhi High Court ordered all Indian ISPs to ban file-sharing sites to prevent unauthorised sharing of Singham.

‘On the whole, Singham is a powerful action-emotional drama that boasts of equally powerful dialogues and absolutely power-packed performances,’ said Komal Nahta of Koimoi. It's a smash hit that will be adored by the masses and the classes, men and women, young and old, wealthy and poor. It's the type of film that consumes the viewer and makes him feel like he's a part of the battle against corruption! The film has a high replay potential. Its company in Maharashtra will benefit from the liberal use of Marathi in the dialogues. Kajal Aggarwal performs with easy grace. Her work is commendable.

It's a nod to one of Bollywood's most popular genres, action films, which are known for their trademark good versus evil themes and well-choreographed stunts.'

'Singham is an old-fashioned but rousing Hindi commercial film that pretty much restores one's faith in this often-maligned brand of cinema,' said Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV. It screams 'super-duper hit' to me. 'No matter how dismissive you are of films that don't allow for shades of grey, odds are Singham will disarm you, if only for a moment.'

Character Analysis

Following the success of Hari's 2010 Tamil film Singam, the producers sold the remake rights for Hindi and Kannada versions. Reliance Big Pictures, the co-producers of the Tamil version, acquired the Hindi remake rights and announced in November 2010 that the version would be directed by Rohit Shetty and starring Ajay Devgn. Prakash Raj was signed on to reprise his role as the original's antagonist, while Asin and Anushka Shetty were reportedly being considered for the female lead role. Kajal Aggarwal, an actress who primarily appears in South Indian films, was cast as the female lead in mid-February 2011.

Controversy

Following pressure from various groups protesting derogatory statements about Kannadigas, Singham was removed from Karnataka cinemas, and some cinemas cancelled shows. Several organisations spoke out against the anti-Kannadiga dialogues in Singham, and the film encountered difficulties in continuing with the shows. There was a request to remove such scenes from the film, and the filmmakers considered their next steps.

Singham premiered in Karnataka a day after its viewing was disrupted due to the removal of some 'objectionable' dialogues.

Box Office Collection

Singham started extremely well at single screens with occupancy around 90% and was average at multiplexes with 50%–60% occupancy,The film grossed 350 million (US$7.5 million) in its first four days. After five days, the earnings were around ₹407.5 million (US$8.73 million) without any drop. The opening week gross collections in India were 442 million (US$9.47 million) and 35 million (US$749,909.48) from overseas, for a total opening week gross of 477 million (US$10.22 million), bringing the nett weekend collections to 475.7 million (US$10.19 million), including ₹120 million (US$2.57 million) in Mumbai area alone. It collected 263.4 million (US$5.64 million) net in the second week, bringing the total two-week net collections to 777.4 million (US$16.66 million).
