Introduction 

Kumkum Bhagya is a popular Indian television drama series that premiered on Zee TV in April 2014. It formerly starred Sriti Jha and Shabir Ahluwalia. Currently, it stars Mugdha Chaphekar and Krishna Kaul as the second-generation leads. The show revolves around the life of a middle-class Punjabi family, the Mehras, and their daughter Pragya, who is a teacher. The series is produced by Ekta Kapoor under the banner of Balaji Telefilms and has garnered a huge fan following due to its engaging storyline, relatable characters, and strong performances by the cast. The show has been successful in capturing the attention of audiences across the globe and has completed more than 2000 episodes to date. Plot 

Play

As the only parent of her two children, Pragya and Bulbul, Sarla Arora manages the Kumkum Bhagya marriage hall. Pragya is still without a groom, which causes Sarla constant worry. Abhishek Prem Mehra, better known by his stage name Abhi, and Pragya cross paths and quickly start to dislike one another. Sarla agrees when Abhi's grandmother, Kulpreet Mehra, requests Pragya's hand in marriage for Abhi. While he is in love with Bulbul, Alia, Abhi's sister, is in love with Purab, his best friend. Alia begs Abhi to marry the woman who is in love with Purab, believing it to be Pragya, as a result of her obsession with Purab. Abhi reluctantly consents for the benefit of his sister's happiness. 

Pragya is saddened to learn the truth about her marriage on their wedding night because Abhi has vowed to make her life miserable. She also learns that Tanu, the best friend of supermodel Alia, is Abhi's partner. Pragya tells Abhi she is in a relationship with Purab in an effort to preserve Bulbul. Bulbul is set to marry Alia after she begs him to forget Purab, but on the big day, Purab flees to wed Bulbul instead. Bulbul is quickly identified as the woman Purab is in love with. Pragya is held responsible for everything by Alia, Abhi, and Tanu, but after a sequence of incidents, he realizes that Bulbul and Purab are actually in love with one another and plans to marry them, which infuriates Alia. During one of the wedding ceremonies, Alia arranges for Bulbul to be kidnapped but Pragya is kidnapped instead.The planning for the wedding is suspended while Abhi looks for Pragya. They both spend a month attempting to get away from Neel, the corporator, and his goons, who are holding them captive. Neel collaborates with Alia because he loves Bulbul just as much as Alia does Purab. Pragya admits her love for Abhi before they go home.

Abhi comes to understand that he shares Pragya's feelings after a series of incidents. He is about to express his love to her when Pragya deceives him and claims that they were just having fun. Abhi makes the decision to find out what is going on with Pragya when she started acting rudely toward the family members, got his cousin Akash married to Pragya's neighbor Rachna, who is pregnant, and also invites Tanu over. Abhi is horrified to learn that Pragya wants everyone to despise her in order for Tanu, who is expecting Abhi's child, to win everyone's hearts. Tanu's pregnancy is unexpectedly revealed to the entire family, which infuriates Kulpreet.For the sake of the unborn child, Abhi consents to marry Tanu. Pragya is involved in an accident, disappears, and is later found to be dead. A few days later, after transferring ownership of the entire property into her name, she makes her return and claims she was only for the money. Later it is revealed that everything was only a ruse and that Pragya, Kulpreet, Rachna, Bulbul, and Purab were plotting to expose Tanu, who was carrying another man's child, and Alia for trying to take over the land and Abhi's business.

Pragya marries Bulbul and Purab in a temple after having a dream that Alia killed Bulbul. Alia plans to have Pragya assassinated at the reception, but Bulbul intervenes to save her and subsequently passes away. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to expose Tanu, Pragya eventually tells Abhi everything. He first does not trust her because he believes that she is to blame for Tanu's accident and the death of the baby, but Pragya actually saved Tanu and the baby's real father. When she informs him about Rachna, Bulbul, Purab, and Kulpreet's involvement, he only starts to trust her. They make up, but their joy is short-lived since Abhi is involved in an accident that Alia and Tanu plotted to cause in order to murder Pragya. He is declared dead in the hospital, but Pragya is able to bring him back to life. When she learns that Abhi has no recollection of everything that transpired after Alia left to study in Australia, which was two and a half years before their marriage, she is distraught. Alia and Tanu resolve to take advantage of Abhi's memory loss after she is forced to relocate back to her mother's home.

Later, Pragya starts working for Abhi's company, and they keep running into each other, but this time they become friends. Abhi is compelled to wed Tanu because Alia and Tanu disapprove of their developing affection. As the wedding day draws near, Abhi fails to show up because he is off looking for Pragya, who has once again been abducted. After Abhi confesses his love to Pragya and the two of them get married at a temple, they seek refuge in the home of a middle-aged man, where Pragya learns that her father is there and that she has two younger sisters in addition to Bulbul. Abhi confesses his love for Pragya and they get married in a temple, not long after, they take refuge in a middle aged man's home and Pragya discovers that he is her father and that she has two younger sisters after Bulbul. Abhi regains his memory, Purab finally tracks down Abhi and Pragya, but Pragya is shot and falls into a flowing river. In a fit of rage, Abhi accidentally kills Dushyant, who shot Pragya. Abhi returns home, throws Alia and Tanu out of the house, and hopes for Pragya's return.

One month later

Although Abhi is seen still awaiting Pragya's arrival, he makes an effort to cheer up his family. Alia and Tanu initially reside in a modest home, but they eventually return to the Mehra Mansion after meeting Munni, a villager who resembles Pragya in appearance. Munni unwillingly agrees to be hired by them to appear as Pragya because she needs the money for her nephew's medical care. Despite his initial skepticism, Abhi lets them stay because he thinks Pragya has lost her memory. Purab, who had gone away for business, meets a villager, Disha, who had saved him from being attacked. They later escape the village to Mumbai and get married with Sarla, Kulpreet, and Abhi's blessing. Purab tells Disha that he is still in love with Bulbul, which she respects, but Purab later falls in love with her. It is later revealed that Pragya is alive and was in a coma. She returns home, only to find Abhi married to another woman, thinking he has moved on from her, but is relieved to know the truth from Munni, and they switch places.

Alia and Tanu notice Munni's changed behaviour and think she has turned on them. They expose her as an impostor, and Pragya goes along with their plan, only to save Munni's niece and nephew, as Munni haad gotten in an accident. Purab, Disha, and Abhi decide to find out the truth and they succeed. Due to a misunderstanding created by Dushyant's widow, Simonika, Abhi blames Pragya for Kulpreet's death, and they get separated, but unknown to both of them, she was pregnant with their baby at that time.

7 Years later 

Pragya now has a daughter with Abhi named Kiara. She is living with King Singh, a famous rapper in London, who has one sided romantic feelings for her. Purab and Disha also have a son, Sunny. Abhi has married Tanu but still misses Pragya. Later, Pragya comes back to Delhi and after a series of events, Abhi and Pragya reconcile. Pragya gets pregnant again and she gives birth to fraternal twin girls. Kiara is killed by Tanu's ex-boyfriend, Nikhil. King Singh returns back to London. Pragya and Abhi are heartbroken and blame each other for Kiara's death and separate, with Pragya taking the elder twin while Abhi keeps the younger one.

20 Years later

While it's clear that Abhi is still anticipating Pragya's arrival, he makes an effort to cheer up his family. Living in a modest home, Alia and Tanu subsequently relocate to the Mehra Mansion after meeting Munni, a peasant who resembles Pragya in appearance. As she needs money for her nephew's medical care, Munni unwillingly agrees to be hired by them to act as Pragya. Although initially dubious, Abhi lets them stay and thinks Pragya has lost her memory. 

Aryan is the son of Purab and Alia, who are married. Finally meeting up with their daughters, Abhi and Pragya. Returning Tanu subsequently weds Abhi, who was intended to wed Pragya. The alliance between Rhea and Ranbir was predetermined when Rhea split up Ranbir and Prachi, but when the truth is revealed, the two eventually give in to their love and secretly wed with just Pragya's approval, leaving Rhea distraught. Abhi misinterprets Pragya, accusing her of turning his back on him and favoring Prachi over Rhea. As a result, he breaks off contact with her. The newlyweds are disowned by the Kohlis. After an accident, Pragya is thought to be dead.

2 Years later

After pulling through and returning from Australia, Pragya decides to exact revenge on Abhi because Tanu and Alia duped her into believing that Abhi was the one who had attempted to kill her. Prachi and Ranbir's blissful union endures, and they are soon welcomed back to the Kohli home. Siddharth, the older cousin brother of Ranbir, marries Rhea. Alia and Purab are finally divorced. Abhi and Pragya reconcile their differences and get back together. They are involved in an accident and pass out. Due to a misunderstanding Rhea caused, Ranbir accuses Prachi of having an extramarital affair with Siddharth, and they become estranged.

1 month later

Now that Sid and Rhea are divorced. While Sushma, Pragya's mentor, tries to comfort a distraught Prachi, Ranbir ends up becoming a wealthy businessman. With Sushma's assistance, Prachi makes the decision to move on and concentrate on her work, but she learns she is expecting Ranbir's child. However, as a result of Rhea's drama surrounding her fake suicide, Ranbir and Rhea wed, and Rhea believes Prachi has moved on. Their union is invalid, nevertheless. Prachi vows to fight for her self-esteem after seeing their wedding. She goes back to the Kohli House to reclaim her legal status as Ranbir's wife and to kick Rhea out.

When Prachi completes her mission, Ranbir marries her a second time. Ranbir and Rhea divorce after Rhea and Alia are revealed and expelled from the Kohli home. Rhea apologizes for her prior behavior before departing from Delhi. In their comas, Alia murders Pragya and Abhi. Alia receives a 14-year prison sentence as retribution for her misdeeds. Panchi, a girl, is born to Prachi. Alia escapes from jail and subsequently abducts Panchi in retaliation. Panchi is believed to be dead after she unintentionally throws her into the river. Ranbir and Prachi divorce after blaming one another for their daughter's death. Prachi had a mishap and is thought to be dead.

6 Years later 

Prachi and Panchi are revealed to be alive, which the Kohlis aren't aware of. Prachi now lives in Bangalore and leads a happy life with Baljeet Dadi and Shahana. She has become a strict businesswoman working as a manager in a renowned company. The Kohlis however, are now on the verge of bankruptcy. Prachi and Ranbir constantly miss Panchi. On the other hand, Panchi, renamed Khushi, who is now being adopted by a woman named Laali and leads a difficult life selling flowers at street for a living. Ranbir now works at a company owned by a businessman.

Prachi arrives in Delhi for work. Ranbir and Prachi meets Khushi unaware that Khushi is their long lost daughter Panchi and they develop a close bond with her. Prachi and Ranbir finally meet, but Prachi still holds a grudge. Akshay, who is the son of Prachi's boss Ashok Tandon, and a friend of hers who supported her over these six years, completes his studies in London and returns to India, and it is revealed he is in love with Prachi. Meanwhile, Rhea who has turned over a new leaf, returns back to Delhi. Ranbir and Prachi want to adopt Khushi. They both individually soon find out that Khushi is their long-lost daughter. Khushi too finds out who her parents are. However, the orphanage doesn’t let Prachi and Ranbir take Khushi away as they are unmarried. Thus, in order for them to win their daughter and stop the other from adopting her, they have no choice but to marry Akshay and Rhea.

Meanwhile, Alia returns again to seek revenge. She succeeds in manipulating Rhea again who grows further obsessed with Ranbir. As the marriage preparations begin, Ranbir realises he cannot marry Rhea as he still loves Prachi. He leaves her and runs to stop Prachi marrying Akshay but fails. Prachi and Akshay get married which leaves Ranbir devastated. He turns to alcohol and soon meets Akshay’s sister Netra. It is revealed that Akshay and Prachi faked their marriage as Akshay only wants to marry Prachi when she is ready. Ranbir promises revenge on Prachi and challenges her that he will return to her life once again.

3 months later 

After once again dismissing Alia and Rhea, Ranbir has moved out of his family's house in the past three months. After adopting Khushi, Prachi is now raising her as part of her new family and sending her to London to pursue higher education. Coincidentally, Ranbir soon makes his entrance into the Tandon estate as Mihika's fictitious boyfriend (a ruse used by them both after Mihika's real boyfriend dumped her). Ranbir discovers Prachi's marriage is not as it looks after being startled to meet Prachi at her new home. He chooses to remain in order to discover the truth.

A twenty-year leap was introduced in March 2019, during which several new characters entered the show and became pivotal characters. Mugdha Chaphekar, Krishna Kaul, and Naina Singh were introduced as the second generation's leads, playing Prachi, Ranbir, and Rhea alongside Sriti and Shabbir, in March 2019. Naina left the show in August 2020 because she was no longer happy playing a negative role, and Pooja Banerjee took over as Rhea. Pooja Banerjee left the show in February 2022 because she is in the final month of her pregnancy and her due date is in March, and she was replaced by Tina Ann Philip.

After only a few weeks, the show had risen to the top five most-watched shows across all GECs. It was touted as the biggest fiction launch of 2014. The show also competed with the long-running Hindi GEC leader Diya Aur Baati Hum, which aired in the same time slot on Star Plus. Reruns of Kumkum Bhagya premiered on Zee Anmol in 2017 and received high ratings in the BARC rural chart when Zee Anmol was FTA. Due to the return of DD Free Dish, it began airing again from episode 1 on June 10, 2020.

A spin-off series Kundali Bhagya premiered on 12 July 2017. The series narrates the story of Pragya's two sisters, Preeta and Srishti and their attempt to find their mother Sarla and how they meet the rich and famous Luthra family. Today's Kumkum Bhagya 1st September 2023 episode starts with Mihika getting shocked to see Prachi's name coming out of Ranbir's mouth while his speech starts to get slurred and he falls asleep on Mihika's lap. Mihika forgets about what he was blabbering about seeing him sleeping on her lap peacefully and tells him that she is going to care for him always as she brushes his hair by combing her fingers through it. On the other hand, Vishakha scolds Akshay for being over-smart and tells him that he should have done the honeymoon with Prachi and then boasts to Ranbeer about it.  

Akshay nods and says that what has happened has happened and now he will make sure that Prachi becomes his during the business trips. He goes to his and Prachi's room and asks her what she's doing seeing her packing her bags.
