Story

Govind and Pramila Shastri and their three kids, Vikrant, Dhruv, and Prerna, are introduced in the first season of Potluck. While Vikrant is married to Akansha and Dhruv is married to Nidhi, Prerna goes on a secret date with Aalim.

We first meet the Shastris at Dhruv and Nidhi Shastri's brand-new home, where Vikrant sees that he, too, needs a bigger place. But his wife Akansha doesn't agree with him, and his ideas also drive a wedge between Dhruv and Nidhi. Prerna goes on a random date and meets Aalim. Then it's shown how Govind got his family to come to the dinner, which Dhruv found out by accident. Nidhi tries to host a potluck by herself, and Vikrant and Akansha spend some valuable time together. Tensions rise when Aalim meets the Shastris and Dhruv tells the truth about Govind's lies, which leads to a fierce fight. After a bad accident, the family gets back together, making for a sweet homecoming.

Reviews

The comedy was written by Ashwin Lakshmi Narayan and Gaurav Lulla. It plays on the idea that families are "together" and also shows how weird the Shashtri family is. It's usually fun to watch, especially when it gets back on track with the story, but it tends to lose its way. At times, the order of things seems to repeat itself. Character development, on the other hand, makes this drama more relatable. Whether it's sibling bonding, chemistry between modern couples, or worried parents who don't understand the idea of giving their kids some space, each character is unique and defies the definition of family bonding. Each episode starts with the family getting ready for the potluck, no matter what their personal equations or business goals are. Overall, this family story is easy to get through because there are only eight short episodes.

The group cast gives perfect performances, especially at the costume-themed anniversary party, where Saloni Khanna and Jatin Sial simply steal the show. The humour isn't laugh-out-loud funny, but it's always enjoyable and well-written, especially the back-and-forth between parents and children or husband and wife, which is full of metaphors.

'Potluck' doesn't bring anything new to the table, other than its modern package. But it's still fun to watch, in the same way that any family drama show with a good amount of humour is.
