Introduction

Sunrisers Hyderabad (stylised as SunRisers Hyderabad, abbreviated SRH) are an Indian Premier League franchise cricket team based in Hyderabad, Telangana (IPL). The franchise is owned by Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group and was founded in 2012 after the IPL terminated the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers. Brian Lara is the team's current coach, and Aiden Markram serves as captain. The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, which has a capacity of 55,000, is their primary home ground. 

The team made their first IPL appearance in 2013, reaching the playoffs and eventually finishing fourth. The Sunrisers won their first IPL title in 2016, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final by 8 runs. Since 2016, the team has qualified for the tournament's play-off stage in every season. The team reached the Indian Premier League finals in 2018, but lost to Chennai Super Kings. The team is regarded as one of the best bowling teams in the country, with a reputation for being able to defend low totals. David Warner leads the team in run scoring, having won the Orange Cap three times in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Bhuvneshwar Kumar leads the wicket-takers' chart, having won the Purple Cap twice, in 2016 and 2017. According to Brand Finance, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the Sunrisers Hyderabad brand value, which fell 4% to US$57.4 million in 2020 as the overall brand value of the IPL fell to US$4.4 billion.

History of Franchise

Sunrisers Hyderabad took over the Deccan Chargers in 2012 and made their debut in 2013. Sun TV Network took over the franchise after the Deccan Chronicle went bankrupt. On December 18, 2012, the squad was announced in Chennai. The team is owned by Sun TV Network, which won the bid with a five-year deal worth Rs 85.05 crore (US$11 million) a week after the Chargers were terminated due to long-term financial issues. Sun TV Network Limited, headquartered in Chennai, is one of India's largest television networks, operating 32 television channels and 45 FM radio stations, making it the country's largest media and entertainment company.

The team jersey was unveiled on March 8, 2013, and G. V. Prakash Kumar's team anthem was released on March 12, 2013. The logo was unveiled on December 20, 2012, along with the announcement that Kris Srikkanth would be replaced as team manager by veteran Muttiah Muralitharan, Tom Moody, and V. V. S. Laxman.

2013 - 2015 

Sunrisers Hyderabad debuted in the Indian Premier League in 2013. They retained 20 players from the Chargers, leaving 13 spots open (eight Indian, five overseas). Six of these were filled by Thisara Perera, Darren Sammy, Sudeep Tyagi, Nathan McCullum, Quinton de Kock, and Clint McKay. Kumar Sangakkara captained SRH for nine matches, and Cameron White captained the team for the remaining seven, as well as the playoff eliminator.  In their first season, the team made the playoffs but were eliminated after losing by four wickets to the Rajasthan Royals at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi on May 22, 2013. The team's home games were all held in Hyderabad.

For the 2014 season, Pune Warriors India were defunct and were not replaced, leaving the league with only eight teams. Dale Steyn and Shikhar Dhawan were retained by the team. As a result of this retention, the team received a 380 million (US$4.8 million) auction purse and two right-to-match cards. Captain Shikhar Dhawan and vice captain Darren Sammy have been named. The season was partially held outside India due to the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, with the first 20 matches held in the United Arab Emirates and the remaining matches played in India from May 2 onwards.

The team finished sixth with six wins and eight losses, failing to qualify for the playoffs. Dhawan led the team for the first ten matches, with Sammy taking over for the final four. For the 2015 season, SRH kept 13 players while releasing 11.David Warner was named captain for the season and led the team in all matches.

Muttiah Muralitharan was named bowling coach and mentor for the team. Sunrisers Hyderabad played their first three home games in Visakhapatnam before returning to Hyderabad for the remaining four games. The team finished sixth again, with seven wins and seven losses, and failed to make the playoffs. Warner was the first Orange Cap winner for SRH.

2016

The Sunrisers Hyderabad had a remarkable season in 2016, winning their maiden IPL title. The team was captained by David Warner and coached by Tom Moody. The team had a solid batting line-up with Warner, Shikhar Dhawan, and Kane Williamson, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mustafizur Rahman led their bowling attack. The team finished the league stage at third place but won three out of their four knockout matches to clinch the title.

2017

Sunrisers Hyderabad had a mixed season in 2017, finishing at fourth place on the points table. David Warner continued to lead the team, and they had a strong bowling attack with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, and Siddarth Kaul. However, their batting struggled, with no player scoring more than 400 runs in the tournament.

2018

In 2018, Kane Williamson was appointed as the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the team had another successful season. The team finished at the top of the points table in the league stage, with Williamson and Dhawan leading the batting and Rashid Khan and Siddarth Kaul leading the bowling attack. However, the team lost to the Chennai Super Kings in the final and finished as the runners-up.

2019

The Sunrisers Hyderabad had a disappointing season in 2019, finishing at fourth place on the points table. Williamson continued to lead the team, but their batting struggled once again, with Warner being their only consistent performer. The team's bowling was also not as effective as it had been in previous seasons.

2020

Sunrisers Hyderabad had a below-par season in 2020, finishing at third place from the bottom on the points table. Warner continued to lead the team, and they had a good batting line-up with Warner, Jonny Bairstow, and Williamson. However, their bowling was not up to the mark, and they struggled to defend totals. Rashid Khan was the only consistent performer in their bowling attack.

2021

SRH retained 22 players and released 5 prior to the auction. SRH purchased three players on auction day (18 February 2021): J Suchith, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Kedar Jadhav. In addition, SRH reassigned Tom Moody to the position of Director of Cricket. Following the team's 0-7 start to the season, SRH named Kane Williamson as captain for the remainder of the season, replacing David Warner.

2022

Following the departure of Trevor Bayliss and Brad Haddin as head coach and assistant coach, Tom Moody and Simon Helmot took over as head coach and assistant coach for the second time. Dale Steyn has been appointed as SRH's fast bowling coach, while Muttiah Muralitharan has retained his position as spin bowling coach. Kane Williamson will captain the team in 2022. They finished eighth on the points table. Following its initial success, the team lost five consecutive matches and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

SRH has retained Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik for the 2022 Mega auction while releasing other players such as Jonny Bairstow, David Warner, Rashid Khan, Manish Pandey, Sandeep Sharma, and Siddarth Kaul. During the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, SRH acquired Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T. Natarajan, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Rahul Tripathi, Abhishek Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Washington Sundar, Nicholas Pooran, and Glenn Phillips.

2023

SRH appointed Brian Lara as head coach for the 2023 season, succeeding Tom Moody. Following a disappointing 2022 season, SRH has named Aiden Markram as the new captain for the 2023 season, succeeding former captain Kane Williamson.

SRH retained 12 players ahead of the auction, while the franchise released captain Kane Williamson and other players such as Nicholas Pooran, Jagadeesha Suchith, and Romario Shepherd. Their key purchases on auction day were Harry Brook, Mayank Agarwal, Heinrich Klaasen, and Adil Rashid.

Home Ground

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is the main cricket stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, and is home to the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Hyderabad Cricket Association owns it (HCA). It has a seating capacity of 55,000 and is located in the eastern suburb of Uppal.

Sunrisers Hyderabad chose the 40,000-capacity Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, as their secondary home ground in 2015, and the team played their first three home games there that season.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad hosted the season opener and final in 2017 as the defending IPL champions. SRH chose their primary home stadium to host their home games. During the 2019 season, the BCCI chose Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium to host the IPL final after the TNCA failed to secure permission to open three locked stands at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. During the 2019 IPL, Hyderabad Cricket Association won the award for best ground and pitch.
