Brahmacharini MataNavratri (नवरात्रि)  is a nine-night celebration where devotees honour the deity Durga through various rituals and prayers. These events consist of veneration acts including presenting offerings and performing the auspicious ritual known as the Aarti. In the year 2023, Shardiya Navratri is scheduled to commence on the 15th of October and conclude on the 24th of October.

The performance of the Aarti holds significant importance in the festivities. It is believed to invite blessings and foster a sense of the Goddess's presence, thereby establishing a spiritual connection with the divine. As devout worshippers sing the Aarti, they create an environment filled with positive, spiritual energy. This divine interaction bestows them with blessings that contribute to their overall well-being, happiness, as well as aid them on their spiritual path.

The ceremony of Aarti is not just a ritualistic practice, but an expression of devotion and reverence to the goddess. It serves to invoke divine energy and establishes a vibrant, positive atmosphere, epitomising the very essence of Navratri celebrations.

Day 2 - Brahmacharini Mata

ब्रह्मचारिणी माता

Brahmacharini Mata

Brahmacharini, derived from the Sanskrit term 'ब्रह्मचारिणी,' refers to a devout female student who resides with her Guru and fellow students in an Ashrama. She represents the second form of Mahadevi in the Navadurga series and is venerated on the second day of Navaratri, which commemorates the nine divine nights of Navadurga.

On the second day of Navaratri, known as Dwitiya, devotees pay homage to Goddess Brahmacharini, one of the incarnations of Parvati. In this specific avatar, Parvati embodies her younger, unmarried self, the Yogini. The worship of Brahmacharini is believed to lead towards the liberation, or moksha, and bestowal of peace and prosperity. She is typically depicted as a serene figure, walking barefoot, holding a japamala (a form of rosary) in one hand and a kamandala (a type of pot) in the other, emanating an aura of bliss and tranquility. The colour associated with this day is green, however, orange, signifying tranquility, is occasionally used to aid in the propagation of strong, positive energy throughout the festivities.

On this sacred day of Navratri, devotees participate in the aartis, expressing their reverence and gratitude towards the goddess. The melodious chants and hymns sung during the Aarti create a serene ambiance as devotees unite their energies to honour and seek blessings from Brahmacharini Mata. This devotional act serves as a pathway to establish a deep connection with her and experience the transformative power she embodies.

As the Aarti progresses, the fragrance of incense permeates the air, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. The lighting of diyas (lamps) symbolically illuminates not only the physical space but also the inner light within each devotee's heart. This illumination signifies the awakening of divine knowledge and the path towards inner illumination and realisation.

Which Colour to Wear on the 2nd Day of Navratri?

On the second day of Navratri, the chosen color is white—a hue that resonates with feelings of serenity and calmness. White signifies an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. This day is dedicated to the celebration of Goddess Brahmacharini. She is often portrayed with a rosary in her right hand and a water pot in her left.

For your Navratri mandir decorations at home, consider using white flowers such as jasmine or white lotus, accentuating the peaceful ambience. In the spirit of the festivities, dress in white attire, and visit friends and family to share the joy and blessings of this auspicious occasion. Here are the Navratri Day 1 colours and Day 3 colours along with their designated Goddesses.

Brahmacharini Mata Ki Aarti

Brahmacharini Mata

Brahmacharini Mata Aarti

In different interpretations of her life story, Parvati, during her youth, determines to wed Shiva, even against her parents' wishes. As a result, she begins a prolonged, nearly 5000-year-long phase of sincere meditation and forgiveness.

Simultaneously, due to the looming threat of an Asura named Tarkasura, whose defeat is destined to occur at the hands of Shiva's offspring, the gods approach Kamadeva, the deity of love and desire. They implore him to arouse affection in Shiva towards Parvati. Kamadeva obliges but finds himself turned to ashes when Shiva reacts by opening his third eye.

Unfazed by this development, Parvati persists in her goal to win Shiva's heart. She adopts an ascetic lifestyle, residing in the mountains, dedicatedly practising yoga and other penances. Parvati's dedicated and disciplined persona comes to be identified as Goddess Brahmacharini. Intrigued, Shiva takes notice of her unwavering devotion, but her resolve remains unshaken even when Shiva, in disguise, attempts to dissuade her.

Around this time, Parvati faces an attack by an Asura named Prakandasura and a huge army. Despite nearing the end of her tapas, Parvati finds herself defenceless. Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati step in to help but are overwhelmed by the Asura forces. In a miraculous turn of events, Parvati's nearby kamandalu topples, resulting in a flood that wipes out the demon army. Parvati then opens her eyes and emits a fire that destroys Prakandasura.

Regardless of her impressive penance that holds the universe in awe, Shiva remains indifferent. He eventually disguises himself as a Brahmachari and visits Parvati, testing her wisdom through puzzles. Impressed with her intellect and beauty, the Brahmachari confesses his affection and proposes to her. Parvati, recognizing her suitor's true identity, accepts the proposal, leading Shiva to reveal himself and declare the end of her tapas. During her penance, Parvati subsists only on the leaves of the wood apple tree (belpatra) and the water from the river.

It is believed Goddess Brahmacharini resides within the Svadhishthana Chakra (sacral chakra). The form of Brahmacharini reveals her unmarried status, while the colour white signifies purity.
