Kushmanda is a revered goddess in Hinduism, known for her role in creating the world through her divine smile. She is considered the fourth aspect of Mahadevi in the Navadurga forms. The name 'Kushmanda' signifies her significance as she is associated with a little bit of warmth or energy that exists in the cosmic egg.

Devotees worship Kushmanda on the fourth day of Navaratri, seeking improved health, wealth, and strength. She is often depicted with eight hands, thus earning the name Ashtabhuja Devi. It is believed that the power to bestow Siddhis and Niddhis, supernatural powers and treasures, resides within her Jap Mala.

According to mythology, Kushmanda created the entire universe with just a smile, known as Brahmanda in Sanskrit. She is particularly fond of Bali, an offering made with white pumpkin known as Kushmanda. This association with Brahmanda and Kushmanda has resulted in her popular name, Goddess Kushmanda. Her divine abode is believed to be in the Anahata chakra.

Kushmanda Devi's Story

Goddess Kushmanda is believed to possess the power of the sun and is considered the source of all energy when she resides within the core of the Sun God. She plays a crucial role in maintaining balance in the universe and providing life to all living beings through the sun's rays, as she embodies the divine energy known as Shakti. However, please note that this information lacks a reliable source.

Once, after the defeat of Jatukasura, there were two asuras named Mali and Sumali, sons of the mighty asura warrior Sukesh. They embarked on a intense tapas (meditation) to impress and seek blessings from Lord Shiva. The tapas they performed emitted such intense positive energy that their bodies started glowing. This unusual glow caught the attention of Suryadev (the Sun God), arousing his curiosity. Against the laws of nature, Suryadev left his place in the solar system to get a closer look at the glowing bodies on Earth. This imbalance in the solar system caused widespread damage.

Suryadev approached the brothers, who were deeply engrossed in their meditation and unaware of the Sun God's presence. As Suryadev drew nearer, both brothers burned into ashes due to the intense heat. When Lord Shiva learned about this, he became angrier with Suryadev and threw his trishul (trident) at him. Suryadev fell unconscious, causing darkness to envelop the entire universe. The loss of gravity and imbalance among celestial bodies added to the chaos. Rishi Kashyapa, the father of the gods, was devastated upon seeing Suryadev in this state.

Enraged, Rishi Kashyapa cursed Lord Shiva, who then approached Parvati for a solution. Parvati created the Sun, a spherical body filled with fire and light. Devavati, blessed by Parvati, gave birth to demonic children, but Parvati herself was named Kushmanda for her benevolence. Suryadev requested Devi Kushmanda to take her place on the Sun Throne in Suryalok, guiding and brightening the Sun.

Performing the Kushmanda Devi Aarti is a profound and effective method to establish a connection with the divine consciousness of Maa Durga. To perform the aarti, you will need a few essential items, including:

• A small thali (plate)
• A diya (clay lamp)
• Incense sticks
• Flowers

Start by arranging the items on the thali. Light the diya and the incense sticks and adorn the thali with flowers.

Performing the Aarti

Begin the aarti by ringing the bell and placing your hands on your heart. Recite the hymns and offer your prayers to the goddess. Move the thali in a clockwise direction in front of the deity's idol. The aarti usually concludes with a 'prasad' offering, which is then distributed amongst the devotees.
