Introduction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is a cricket team that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The 2008-founded club competes in its home games at Chennai's M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. India Cement Limited, via holding firm Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited, owns the team. The team's owners' participation in the 2013 IPL betting case resulted in a two-year suspension from the IPL beginning in July 2015, and it won the championship in its 2018 comeback season. MS Dhoni serves as the team's skipper, and Stephen Fleming is the head coach. CSK became the first unicorn sports company in India in January 2022.

History

The Indian Premier League, a Twenty20 league that will begin play in 2008, was unveiled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in September 2007. The BCCI revealed the proprietors of eight city-based franchises in January 2008. After Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, the Chennai franchise was purchased by India Cements for $91 million, making it the league's fourth most expensive squad. For ten years, India Cements purchased the licence rights. Due to his role as vice chairman and managing director of India Cements Ltd., the former ICC Chairman N. Srinivasan was the de facto proprietor of the Chennai Super Kings. The licence was given to Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd., a different organisation. After the controversial BCCI change to clause 6.2.4 that permitted board members to have financial stakes in the IPL and Champions League Twenty20 on January 22, 2015, was overturned by the Supreme Court of India.

Home Ground

The iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, also known as The Chepauk, is the home field of the Super Kings and is situated in Chennai. The stadium bears M. A. Chidambaram's name, a past president of the BCCI. The earliest stadium in India still in regular use is this one. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association owns the venue, which as of May 2013 could accommodate 50,000 spectators. The stadium got significant renovations in 2010 in preparation for hosting some of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup matches. During this renovation, the number of seats grew from 36,000 to 50,000, and three new stands were built.

Logo and Theme Song

The club name is depicted in blue alongside an orange roaring lion's head on the logo. The crown that appears above the squad name is the same one that appears in the Coromandel King brand logo. The roaring lion logo, according to the logo designers, represents the team name because the lion is the ruler of the jungle. The logo's features represent a number of characteristics, including vitality, youth, a commitment to excellence, and a fiery spirit.

The team's primary colour is yellow with blue and orange stripes on either side of the jersey. The jersey also incorporates the roaring lion logo in the center of the shirt below the logo of the main sponsor. The basic look of the jersey has remained the same from the first season with no changes except for the sponsor placement. The kit manufacturer until 2014 was Reebok and from 2015, Australian Apparel and Sportswear manufacturer Spartan manufactures kits for the team.

Controversy

N. Srinivasan’s ownership?

Clause 6.2.4 of the BCCI rule read, No Administrator shall have, directly or indirectly, any Commercial Interest in the Matches or Events conducted by the Board. This was the case until September 2008. However, because he was the managing director of India Cements at the time and the administrator and vice-chairman of BCCI, N. Srinivasan assumed ownership of the Chennai Super Kings.

The owners of other teams expressed worry in 2011 about the potential for rigging during the IPL auctions. Just before the bidding started, Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani questioned the shifting of the player rankings.

2013 Betting Scam

Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was detained by the Mumbai Police in May 2013 on suspicion of betting on IPL games. Meiyappan, the Team Principal of the Super Kings, was summoned by the Mumbai Police, and it was discovered during questioning that Meiyappan had connections to bookmakers via thespian Vindu Dara Singh. Mumbai cops detained Meiyappan for a betting offence. In response, Srinivasan made the decision on June 2, 2013, to briefly vacate his position as BCCI President, pending the outcome of the investigation into the betting case. Meiyappan was charged with illegal betting during the 2013 IPL by the three-member panel that the Supreme Court of India named after conducting an investigation into the betting case.

Suspension from IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India was given until March 25, 2014, by the Supreme Court of India, in which case Srinivasan's presidency would have to be terminated. The Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings proprietors were banned from the Indian Premier League for two years on July 14, 2015, by the RM Lodha Committee. The Chennai Super Kings' appeal for the suspension to be lifted was accepted for hearing by the Supreme Court of India on February 24.

Interesting Facts

Conclusion

The IPL success of CSK can be credited to their strong squad lineup, which consists of a mix of young and experienced players. The squad has had a number of other elite players over the years, including Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, and Shane Watson, in addition to MS Dhoni. Stephen Fleming, a former New Zealand captain and coach, and Eric Simons, a former South African all-rounder, are among the shrewd squad management and coaching staff at CSK. CSK is one of the most well-liked and successful teams in the IPL overall, and it has a sizable support base both in India and abroad.
