David Dhawan directed the 1993 Hindi-language action comedy movie Aankhen. Chunky Pandey, Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan and Ritu Shivpuri star alongside Govinda, who plays two roles in it. It was the highest-grossing Indian movie of 1993 and a box office smash. Pokiri Raja is the Telugu name of the remake.

Hasmukh Rai has two problems: Munnu and Bunnu, his two boys. The brothers are well-known slobs who frequently commit offences and intricate practical jokes. Hasmukh learns that his boys have been avoiding school for the past three years and have been deceiving him about their school grades in both sports and academics. They are consequently expelled from college and ultimately their home. Later, one of their practical jokes turns violent, and Bunnu vanishes, leading to speculation that he has died. Munnu is framed for killing Bunnu. Gauri Shankar, Bunnu's indistinguishable cousin, arrives in town from a small Indian town in the meantime. He is misidentified as Bunnu, which causes amusing miscommunications and ongoing commotion.

Aankhen was the biggest blockbuster of the year 1993, smashing all records in the process. It went on to earn INR 46 crores at the box office which is equivalent to INR 278 crores in 2022. It was the debut movie of Ritu Shivpuri and also helped Govinda to establish himself as the comedy king of Bollywood.
