Nitya Mehra makes her directorial debut in Hindi cinema with the 2016 Indian sci - fi romance drama film Baar Baar Dekho. Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif play the key characters in the movie, with Ram Kapoor and Sarika filling out the supporting cast. It also has cameo appearances from some very famous personalities like Tunisha Sharma, Rohan Joshi, Naisha Khanna, Sanjana Sanghi and Rajit Kapur. The film is inspired by the 2006 comedy film from Hollywood, 'Click' starring Adam Sandler.
The plot revolves around Diya and Jai who, while growing up, fall in love with each other. Diya is an artist, while Jai is a professor of mathematics. Jai wants to be awarded a fellowship at Cambridge University, but Diya wants to wed her longtime partner. Jai grudgingly consents to tie the knot with her but then backs out due to the idea of the seven vows, the gazillion rites, and the worry of getting divorced. Jai dislikes these pointless customs and disparages his marriage. He informs Diya that he may not include her in his plans for his promising future. She leaves broken-hearted. On his honeymoon, Jai gets intoxicated, passes out, and then wakes up in Thailand. He finds out that it has been ten days since he married Diya.
Then, in 2018, he awakens in Cambridge to discover that his wife is on the verge of giving birth to their child. He learns that his marriage has been on for two years. He becomes aware that he has been time travelling and cannot stop it. The following time he awakens, in 2034, he is a Cambridge University professor, living the life of his dreams. His marriage to Diya lasted for 18 years. Jai discovers to his sorrow that this is the day he and Diya get divorced. He returns home, broken-hearted, and begs to go back in time to make things right.
The following morning, in 2023, Jai awakens to find himself in the past, 7 years since his wedding. He balances a lot of priorities between his profession and family. However, Jai prioritises his business and travels to his colleague Chitra's residence to support her after her split rather than Diya's first painting display. Chitra makes an attempt to seduce Jai. Jai rushes back home assuming this to be the reason for his divorce, but his family disapproves of him.
Jai, though, is certain that he has corrected the situation. He awakens the following morning in the year 2047 to discover that he is now 60 years old. He learns that everyone had gathered for his mother's burial after she passed away. After the cremation, Jai is startled to learn that Diya and he are still separated and that Diya wed Nikhil Khanna, the show's opener and the owner of an art gallery, who was loved by Jai's mother and kids. As Jai recovers from this blow, the priest who officiated at his wedding approaches him and stresses the need for timing. Jai is granted a second chance to make things right when he returns on schedule on the same day in 2023, seven years since his wedding. He corrects the situation this time. He spends more time with his kids, works hard, treats Diya with respect, and goes to her art show. In the end, Jai is a contented man.
After arguing with Diya over his life and job, getting wasted, and potentially falling asleep while starting the lengthy mental journey into his future, Jai awakens back in the present. Jai runs back to Diya, savouring each moment and happy to see his mother once more. Jai makes amends with Diya and vows to be loyal to her. They get married, and everyone dances as the movie come to a conclusion.
Baar Baar Deko was critically acclaimed for its unique storyline and the way romance and science fiction were perfectly balanced in the movie. It was also praised for its catchy songs which are still used in functions. However, the movie did a mediocre business at the box office, amassing a gross total of INR 62 crores against the budget of INR 53 crores. Its lack of success can be attributed to its complex storyline, which the general audience found difficult to keep up with.
