Balika Vadhu is a 2,245 episode Indian serial opera that aired on Colors TV from July 21, 2008 to July 31, 2016. The story takes place in rural Rajasthan and follows the life of a young bride from childhood until adulthood. It starred Toral Rasputra, Shakti Anand, Mahhi Vij, Siddharth Shukla and Smita Bansal, among others in lead roles.

Anandi Singh, who is eight years old, is married to Jagdish Singh, who is also a youngster. Anandi struggles to embrace herself and her duties as a friend, wife, and daughter-in-law in a new family of strangers. In addition, Sugna, Jagdish's widowed sister, is married to Shyam. Anandi had to return to her village for 5 years because of child marriage issues.

5 years later, Anandi visits her in-laws again. Anandi and Jagdish are in love. Mahavir Singh, Basant's father, returns. Jagdish is pursuing his college studies in Mumbai. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Gauri, a colleague, and mocks Anandi for her lack of education.

4 years pass by and Jagdish has finished his MBBS and is planning to marry Gauri. He informs Anandi that he is not in love with her. Bhairon, Jagdish's father, severes all relations with him. Gauri learns about Jagdish's marriage to Anandi and resolves to leave him. Anandi enables Jagdish to live with Gauri after he marries, believing that marriage should be based on love rather than coercion.

Anandi is later accused for her miscarriage, prompting her to seek vengeance on her in-laws. She resolves to move on by divorcing Jagdish and begins teaching local girls while fighting against child marriage. Shiv Shekhar, the district collector, is pleased by Anandi. When Jagdish discovers Gauri is cheating on him, he realises his error and divorces her. Anandi marries Shiv and accepts Jagdish's forgiveness. They continue to be friends. The story takes a topsy-turvy ride from here on which includes, death, betrayal, love deception and what not which makes this the perfect family entertainer. 

The show was widely regarded as a ground-breaking show for bringing up issues like child marriage in rural India through primetime television. It was loved by audiences for almost a decade and is still rewatched by millions across the country.
