Barfi Johnson, a young deaf and mute boy who forms a special bond with two young girls named Shruti Ghosh and Jhilmil Chatterjee while frequently being pursued by a local police officer named Inspector Sudhanshu Dutta for his nuisances, is the subject of the movie, which is set in the 1970s in Darjeeling and Kolkata.
A local police officer named Inspector Sudhanshu Dutta frequently chases Murphy "Barfi" Johnson, a young deaf and mute youngster who resides in Darjeeling and is renowned as a nuisance because he destroys public light poles or performs gags on helpless people. Barfi soon meets Shruti Ghosh, a stunning and intelligent young woman who is new to Darjeeling. He is enamoured with her because of her divine beauty and charm. Shruti's mother, on the other hand, encourages her not to wed him because of his handicap and lack of wealth. Shruti, who reluctantly follows her mother's wishes, gets married to Ranjeet Sengupta, moves away from Darjeeling, and ends all connection with Barfi.
Barfi's father is hospitalised for kidney failure shortly after Shruti leaves, and Barfi is requested to raise 7000 rupees for his surgery. Jhilmil Chatterjee, an autistic childhood friend of Barfi, is unexpectedly abducted, and her affluent father Durjoy Chatterjee hires Inspector Dutta to look for her. After failing to rob a nearby bank, Barfi discovers Jhilmil in an unattended van and drives off with her. He hides her in his home and notifies Jhilmil's family that he is demanding INR 7,000. Her father gives Barfi the ransom, but sadly, his father passes away soon as he pays the medical bill. Dejectedly leaving Jhilmil at her sitter's home, she forces Barfi to take her away because she won't stay there. Later, Barfi and Jhilmil deftly escape from Inspector Dutta, and the two swiftly relocate to Kolkata.
A surprise reunion between Barfi and Shruti, who is dissatisfied with her marriage to Ranjeet, occurs six years later. She renews her connection with Barfi, and the two of them get closer once more, much to the envious chagrin of Jhilmil, who then vanishes. Shruti reports Jhilmil missing to the police. As soon as Inspector Dutta learns of Jhilmil's passing, he heads to Kolkata where he runs into Barfi. Inspector Dutta captures Barfi and transports him to Darjeeling following a humorous and thrilling chase. While the suspect is being questioned at the police station, another ransom demand is made there. Despite the fact that her body is not discovered, Jhilmil appears to have been killed during the handover of the ransom. To solve the case, the police accuse Barfi of killing Jhilmil.
After pursuing Barfi for his nuisances, Inspector Dutta felt fond of him and asked Shruti to take him away, giving him a second chance at life. Due to the loss of Jhilmil, Shruti brings Barfi back to Kolkata in the hopes that she will finally be able to be with him. Nevertheless, Barfi learns Jhilmil's special-care home address from the notes she had made there. He takes Shruti to the facility for people with special needs, where it emerges that her father staged both of Jhilmil's abductions in order to steal a sizable amount of money from her family's trust. In his second effort, he pretended she had passed away so that she could live apart from her drunken mother in the special-care facility. Jhilmil and Barfi had a joyful reunion and they soon get married.
34 years later, Barfi is depicted as being very ill in a hospital where Jhilmil is lying next to him on a hospital bed as they pass away together. They passed away quietly, not wishing to part ways in life or in death, according to Shruti's testimony. As the titles roll, footage of Barfi and Jhilmil's joyful times is shown.
Barfi was a major critical and commercial success, with everyone praising its storyline and the acting done by the star cast. It was also a blockbuster hit, amassing a whopping INR 180 crores at the box office and went on to win the Best Film Award at the Filmfare Awards.
