Boxing, sometimes known as "Western boxing," or "pugilism," is a combat sport in which two opponents trade blows for a set period of time within a boxing ring while typically using protective gloves and other safety gear like hand wraps and mouthguards.

Despite the fact that the name "boxing" is typically associated with "western boxing," in which only the fists are used, boxing has evolved in diverse ways across various regions and civilizations. In general, boxing refers to a group of combat sports that emphasise striking. Two opponents engage in a fight using at least their fists, and depending on the regulations, they may also use kicks, elbow strikes, knee strikes, and headbutts.

When a referee determines that an opponent is unable to continue, disqualifies an opponent, or receives an opponent's resignation, a winner may be determined before the end of the rounds. The winner of the fight is decided by the judges' scorecards when the final round of the bout concludes with both contestants still standing. A professional fight is deemed a draw if both competitors receive identical scores from the judges. Because there must be a winner in Olympic boxing, judges choose one fighter based on technical standards.

The Boxing Federation of India is responsible for overseeing boxing in India. Only a small number of Indian boxers choose to pursue professional boxing, with the majority of boxing in India taking place on a national and international amateur level. This has been explained by a lack of promotional businesses, resources, and income. India, on the other hand, consistently wins medals at international competitions, such as the Asian and Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. Popularity of boxing has grown in some places, especially Haryana. Medalists in a range of weight classes have been produced by the Bhiwani Boxing Club in Bhiwani, Haryana.

Boxing came in several forms throughout ancient India. The Rig Veda (circa 1500–1000 BCE) and the Ramayana (circa 700–400 BCE) are the earliest references to musti-yuddha.]  The Mahabharata describes two combatants boxing with clenched fists and fighting with kicks, finger strikes, knee strikes, and headbutts during the time of King Virata. Duels (niyuddham) were frequently fought to the Rudradaman, the monarch of the Western Satraps, was reputed to be an expert horseman, charioteer, elephant rider, swordsman, and boxer in addition to being knowledgeable in "the great sciences," which included Indian classical music, Sanskrit language, and reasoning.

Prizefighting was forbidden and illegal venues gave rise to the contemporary sport, which has since grown into a multimillion dollar industry. [citation needed] Locations like Mexico, Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe prove to be full of young aspiring sportsmen that want to become the future of boxing. Young talent still largely originates from impoverished regions of the world. Even in the United States, areas like the inner boroughs of New York and Chicago have produced talented young people. Rubin claims that the middle class in America lost interest in boxing, and that the majority of boxers in contemporary America are street fighters who come from the streets.
