The Kapil Sharma-hosted sketch comedy and celebrity conversation programme Comedy Nights With Kapil debuted on Colors TV on June 22, 2013, and it ran till January 24, 2016, when it was cancelled. In several of the episodes, famous people appear as guests to promote their newest movies in the manner of a humorous talk show. A fire that started on the show's sets at Film City in Goregaon on September 25, 2013, resulted in the set collapsing and an estimated loss of $20 million.  Following the fire, two episodes of Bigg Boss were filmed on the Lonavla sets.  The programme rose to the top of the scripted TV ratings in India in September 2013.

Sharma received the 2013 Entertainer of the Year award at the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year ceremony. The show has had entertainers in recurring episodes such as Ali Asgar, Navjot Singh Sidhu , Sunil Grover, Soni Singh, Smita Bansal, and Kiku Sharda

Following a three-year successful run, Kapil Sharma chose to end the programme due to disagreements with the channel Colors. The final episode was broadcast on January 24, 2016. Due to low Target rating points and intense competition with Kapil, Colors started to re-telecast previous seasons of the show in its Sunday afternoon time slots in August 2016.

Srujan Lokesh hosts the Kannada version of the programme, Majaa Talkies. This programme is shown on Colors Kannada, Colors TV's Kannada channel.
