Sanjay Gadhvi and Aditya Chopra worked together to create the action-thriller movie Dhoom in 2004. The movie features Manoj Joshi, Arav Chowdharry, Ayesha Raza, and Mehul Bhojak in supporting parts in addition to Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Uday Chopra, Esha Deol, and Rimi Sen in the key roles. It is the first instalment of the Dhoom series.

The plot opens in the Indian city of Mumbai, where a group of criminals riding high-tech motorbikes and commanded by the charismatic Kabir, (John Abraham) are robbing banks and other public buildings before escaping down the Western Express Highway.

ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) is called in to work on the case. Dixit sets up a trap to catch the gang but it doesn't work, so he gets the assistance of a local bike dealer and racer named Ali Akbar Fateh Khan (Uday Chopra). The gang's leader, Kabir, eventually teases Dixit, saying that even if he were directly in front of him, Dixit couldn't catch him. When it turns out that he was right, Dixit reportedly breaks up with Ali due to his failure.

Then, as a stand-in for Rohit, the gang member killed by Dixit, Kabir recruits Ali into his organisation. Sheena, a fellow gang member, sparks Ali's romantic interest. Later, the gang travels to Goa to pull off one last major theft before breaking up permanently. Kabir focuses his attention on the biggest casino in India. On New Year's Eve, Kabir and his gang quickly rob the casino, but they soon learn Dixit has duped them into falling into a trap. A brawl breaks out once it is discovered that Ali was working for Dixit the entire time.

Kabir is able to avoid Dixit, who then returns to the gang's vehicle where Ali has Sheena restrained and gagged. Ali is then brutally attacked by Kabir for betraying him, but Dixit arrives just in time to save him. Except for Sheena, the group takes off, and Dixit and Ali pursue Kabir. They kill every other gang member but Kabir, who rides away on his bike. Dixit and Ali have him in a corner with nowhere to go. Instead of letting Dixit arrest him, Kabir decided to end his own life by riding his bike off a cliff and into the water. Dixit and Ali fight with one another in a friendly way as the movie comes to a close.

Dhoom went on to become one of the top grossing movies of 2004, earning around Rs. 290 million in the box office. It received mixed reviews from critics, with people praising its chase and action sequences but criticising the lack of proper script for a movie of such grand scale. It has gone on to receive cult status over the years and its immense popularity helped it become a franchise, with 2 more instalments coming up in 2006 and 2013 named Dhoom 2 and Dhoom 3 respectively.
