Farhan Akhtar wrote the screenplay and directed the coming-of-age romance movie Dil Chahta Hai in 2001. It was his first film, and it was produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and distributed by Excel Entertainment. The romance between three college graduates, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna, is the main subject of the movie. Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, Suchitra Pillai, and Dimple Kapadia are also featured.

Following their recent college graduation, Akash, Sameer, and Sid travel to Goa to celebrate. They unwind in a beautiful location by the sea and make a promise to go back there each year. Only Sid doubts if they will continue to be friends after life takes over. Upon their return, Sameer's parents arrange for him to wed Pooja, the daughter of their friends, and Akash's parents urge him to run the family business in Sydney. At about the same time, Tara, a new neighbour who is single, moves in with Sid's assistance. Soon, Sid falls in love with Tara and Sameer, with Pooja.

Sid tells his friends that he loves Tara after dropping her off on the way home. Sid is enraged and slaps Akash when the latter makes a derogatory remark regarding Tara's age. Both Akash and Sameer are surprised, and the former storms out indignantly, hurting his connection with Sid in the process.

Akash travels for Sydney, while Sid quits the town to enrol in a painting degree programme in Kasauli. Akash  meets Shalini on the plane, a former college friend who agrees to show him around Sydney while he's there. While waiting for Pooja to break up with her severely regimented lover Subodh, Sameer eventually approaches her. When Tara overhears Sid talking to his mother about his thoughts, she doesn't want to engage in conversation with him since she thinks a connection between them is not feasible.

By falling in love with Shalini, Akash in Sydney is having a change of heart. But Shalini is engaged, and she goes back to India to wed Rohit, who is quite possessive of her. Akash, who is devastated, is requested by his father to go back home. On the eve of Shalini's wedding, he approaches her and proposes to her despite Rohit's threats, encouraged by others around him and Shalini's uncle Mahesh. Shalini struggles with her allegiance to Rohit's parents, who brought her up after her own parents passed away. Parents of Rohit advise her to follow her heart and wed Akash instead.

Sid discovers that Tara has advanced cirrhosis. She dies while they are still speaking as he runs to the hospital. Sid is devastated, but the evening allowed him to see Sameer again and make amends with Akash. Shalini and Pooja join the pals as they make their promised comeback to Goa after six months. Sid notices a woman in the distance at the location of their earlier picnic who smiles at him. He approaches her and the three couples are seen having supper together at a restaurant and the movie comes to a close.

Dil Chahta Hai did well in the Box Office, earning close to Rs. 397 million. Most of its earnings came from metropolitan cities as they related with the modern, upper-class city youths that were shown. It didn't do well in rural areas because of the lack of relativity. Critics called this movie one of its kind and were happy to see a refreshing change of genre in Bollywood. It was also praised for its accurate portrayal of the Indian youth and has gone on to receive cult status. It is also known as the pioneer of travel movies in India and has inspired directors to create similar, well received movies like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do.
