Urmila Matondkar and Saif Ali Khan play the main characters in Sriram Raghavan's 2004 Hindi-language neo-noir thriller Ek Hasina Thi, produced by Ram Gopal Varma and directed by Sriram Raghavan. The film also stars Seema Biswas, Sheeba Chadda, Aditya Srivastava and Pratima Kazmi in supporting roles.
Rich and stylish Karan is highly territorial of Sarika, the lady he appears to adore. He has a short fuse and can lose it at any moment. Sarika is detained and placed in judicial custody when Karan asks her to watch over a bag containing illicit firearms belonging to his associate, a hitman. She was detained for having connections to the underworld. She receives a defence lawyer from Karan, who assures her of her innocence. Since there is no evidence to the contrary, the lawyer recommends she come forward and admit to the crime.
Sarika agrees after being persuaded that judge will issue her a short sentence and perhaps even liberate her in exchange for her cooperation. But the judge gives her a seven-year sentence of hard labour with no chance of release. Sarika then understands that Karan is connected to the criminal underground and that he set her up to draw attention away from him from the police. The passing of her father, the continuous hardships of prison life, and hatred for Karan all occur shortly after this realisation. She assaults Gomati, a bully inmate who regularly targets her. Pramila, an older prisoner with contacts outside the facility, resolves to assist her. Sarika's physical appearance completely changes.
Sarika undergoes internal and external transformations, starting with letting go of her aversion to rats. After Sarika breaks out of jail, ACP Malti Vaidya sets out to track her down. After learning about Karan's whereabouts, Sarika initially confronts Mathur and kills him. She came to the realisation that Karan was a pimp who was really trying to sell her, and she is enraged to see Karan living the high life with the money he earned from sex trafficking. The information about Mathur's strange death makes Karan a suspect. Karan quickly finds that Sarika has escaped, but he is unable to connect the dots. Sarika discovers that Karan is employed by a gangster with numerous illegal businesses operating under his guise.
Karan becomes stuck after she murders the gangster's brother because he was the last person to see the victim alive. Although stunned by the discovery, Karan attributes it to a rival gang. Sarika impersonates running into him in the interim. She presents as being sympathetic with him. Karan chooses to play with her for a while after realising that she hasn't yet recognised his trick. Although Karan confronts a man he considers to be a traitor, he thinks that someone else may have entered after Karan left. Karan murders the man as well before he has a chance to speak.
As Karan becomes involved in a cat-and-mouse chase, Sarika finds it amusing. She robs Karan's boss of money, and once more uses Karan as a scapegoat. Karan quickly realises the plot, though. She surprises him by admitting that she has burned the money when he confronts and physically abuses her. She is forced to confess in front of Karan's supervisor under the threat of violence. However, she pretends ignorance and says Karan forced her to say so. Karan starts fighting as his boss's thugs attack him. The ACP and the police enter at that precise moment.
The ACP is successful in executing Karan's chief in a shootout. Either the gang is put down or caught. While the ACP is being shot, Karan is able to escape. His success is fleeting, though, as Sarika suddenly appears from behind him, seizes control of him, demands that he drive to a remote location, and then shoots him. She knocks him out and ties him up in a rat-infested cave. As Karan begins to feel better, Sarika explains that she used to be terrified of rats and that she chose this location so that Karan would experience the same anguish that she did while she was incarcerated. She speaks to Karan, who finds it confusing, but she leaves him in the tunnel with a spotlight pointing in his direction.
Karan shouts, but no one can hear him because he is in a remote area. The flashlight eventually runs out, and Karan starts to weaken. A gang of rats attacks and brutally executes him. Karan suffers a torturous, protracted death. After successfully carrying out her plan to inflict revenge on Karan, Sarika eventually turns herself into the police and gives the ACP the bag of cash she seized from Karan's boss. The movie finishes with Sarika leaving jail after staring at the prisoners inside as though she has found her calling in life.
