English Vinglish is an Indian comedy-drama movie. It was produced by Sunil Lulla, R. Balki, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, and R. K. Damani under the banner of Hope Productions. English Vinglish was first shot in Hindi; after that, it was partially reshot in Tamil and, along with a Telugu dub. English Vinglish was released on October 5, 2012 with a running time of 134 Minutes.

After a 15-year absence, Sridevi made her come back with English Vinglish which also Adil Hussain, Priya Anand, and foreign actors like Damian Thompson and Mehdi Nebbou in a supporting role.

The protagonist of the story is a woman by the name of Shashi(Sridevi) who runs a modest business selling snacks. To stop her husband Satish Godbole(AadilHussain) and children Sapna Godbole(Navika Kotia) and Sagar Godbole(Shivansh Kotia) from making fun of her poor command of the language, Shashi enrolls in an English-speaking course and earns self-respect in the process. Sridevi's portrayal of the lead was influenced by Shinde's mother.

Gauri Shinde took home every 2012 Best Debut Director award for English Vinglish. It was chosen as India's official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards. Sridevi was acclaimed as the "female Rajinikanth in India" and the "Meryl Streep of India” after the movie received praise from audiences around the world at many international film festivals.

English Vinglish is directed and written by Gauri Shinde. The star cast of English Vinglish includes Sridevi, Aadil Hussain, Navika Kotia, Shivansh Kotia, Damian Thompson, Priya Anand, Sujata Kumar, and others.
