Rohit Shetty and Neeraj Vora collaborated on the 2006 Indian comedy film Golmaal, which was also co-produced by Parag Sanghvi and Dhilin Mehta under the banners of K Sera Sera Private Limited and Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Limited. Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, Tusshar Kapoor, Rimi Sen, Sanjay Mishra, Paresh Rawal, and Manoj Joshi all appear in the first film of the Golmaal franchise.

The lives of Gopal, Lucky, Madhav and Laxman are central to the narrative. Brilliant student Laxman gets sidetracked from his studies by his naughty group of pals, Gopal, Madhav, and Lucky. Gopal is the group's muscle, Madhav is its brain, and Lucky is the right person but mute. The three friends carry out their nefarious schemes in Laxman's dorm room. Laxman is forced by his pals to engage in a series of frauds in order to raise some cash, and as a result, he gets expelled from college. The quartet owe Vasooli, a criminal-turned-garage owner, money and he pursues them relentlessly. Each of them exposes their pasts during a brief stop in the woods.

The mother of Laxman once served as a government official's maid. Madhav experienced a difficult upbringing as a result of seeing his parents quarrel frequently. Lucky's father remarried after leaving him and his mother. His stepchildren used to make fun of Lucky for being mute. Gopal admits that he was raised as an orphan in the Jamnadas Orphanage.

The group is located in the woods by Vasooli and his crew, who then pursue them. The mischievous quartet then seeks refuge at the home owned by a blind couple named Somnath and Mangala, who are holding out for their grandson Sameer to receive their paternal grandparents' secret treasure hoard. While the other three buddies enter the house covertly, Gopal enters the residence under the guise of Sameer who is returning from America.

As Gopal's speech and Laxman's physique combine to form Sameer, a cat-and-mouse game ensues. Funny scenarios occur each time the blind couple is in the middle of them. The gang now has the opportunity, setting, and "tools" to fall in love with Nirali, the flirtatious girl next door. Their attempts to win the lady's affection fall short. There is a hunt for the chest in addition to their amorous interests. Additionally, a criminal by the name of Babli wants to take the chest from the house owned by the couple. The quartet unintentionally and unknowingly block all of his plans.

Gopal, Laxman, Madhav, and Lucky learn of Sameer's passing from Somnath after the group of four discovers a chest in the home concealed under an antique painting, despite Laxman's pleas to not open the chest. After learning that Somnath and Mangala had been irreparably blinded in an accident, Somnath's son and his family were killed in a vehicle accident as they travelled to India to meet his parents. Somnath travelled to America with assistance from his buddy, a police commissioner, and ignited the pyres for his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson, whose ashes he afterwards stored in an urn in accordance with Hindu tradition and kept in the chest.

Mangala hears the entire ordeal and is horrified. She sobs, blaming her husband for having lied to her for so many years and for preventing her from holding her grandchild or lighting the pyres. She also criticises the other three for deceiving her and upsetting her sentiments.

Later, Babli admits that he hid the diamonds in the urn Somnath was carrying as he travelled back to India when they arrived with his group. The fight eventually ends with Gopal being accidentally stabbed by Babli in the butt with a knife, and falling unconscious shortly after, but not before warning Madhav, Lucky, and Laxman to not touch the knife, leaving the three friends in guffaws. Pandurang, a hitman originally sent out by Babli as a deep cover maid, eventually decides to join Gopal's side after having heard about Sameer's reality and fights off the gangsters. After witnessing Gopal's butt bleeding, Babli also passes out.

Gopal is finally able to have the knife removed from his butt after being treated to a hospital, and Babli is then taken into custody for his crimes. Then, as compensation for seizing Babli, Laxman, Gopal, Madhav, and Lucky receive 10% of the jewels' original worth. The other three are dismayed when Nirali decides to wed Lucky, claiming that she wants a spouse who solely pays attention to her and has discovered loyalty and real love in him and him alone.

Golmaal was a critical and commercial success, earning close to 47 crores against a budget of 15 crores. It was praised for its comic timing and storyline. The fans adored the movie so much that it has sequels under its name, making it a franchise. The fifth movie of the franchise, tentatively titled Golmaal 5 is set to release in the year 2023.
