The romantic comedy-drama film Hasee Toh Phasee was released in 2014 in Hindi under the direction of Vinil Mathew and under the production of Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap. Along with Manoj Joshi, Sharat Saxena, Neena Kulkarni, Bhavna Chauhan, and Anil Mange playing supporting parts, the movie stars Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra in the key roles.

Nikhil, a poor businessman, believes Karishma, an actress, is his true love. Nikhil is described as someone who thinks there shouldn't be any straying after making a commitment to a girl. Before getting married, Nikhil asks Karishma's father for 50 lakhs so he can secure a contract. However, Karishma and her father ridicule him because he frequently makes money without shame. He would then be in a position to demonstrate his abilities without their lending the money.

Then Nikhil runs across Meeta, the younger sister of Karishma, with whom he had a brief meeting seven years prior. Meeta, an IIT graduate with a PhD in chemical engineering, is a super-intelligent nerd with odd quirks and tics. She ran away to China seven years ago after stealing the money from her father for a project because he had refused to give it to her because he had been brainwashed by his older brother into believing she was a drug addict and needed the money to buy drugs, which caused him to have a cardiac arrest on the day of Karishma's Now that Meeta has shown up to meet her father one week before Nikhil and Karishma's wedding, Karishma is worried that her sister's unexpected appearance will once again ruin their wedding.

Returning with the intention of stealing once more, Meeta is distracted by Nikhil throughout the course of the following seven days. Nikhil and Meeta fall in love over the course of these seven days filled with social and personal events, but Nikhil holds back out of fear of betraying Karishma. He discovers that Meeta forged her father's signature to obtain a sizable loan of Rs. 1 crore from a Chinese investor for her study. She must take money from her father's account in order to protect him from the investor's henchmen during the three days that have passed since the deadline for return was originally set. While assisting Meeta in breaking into her father's account, Nikhil counsels her to apologise to her family. Nikhil realises he is getting married to the wrong girl after Meeta is reunited with her family.

Meeta decides against robbing her father of his money and tells him the truth instead. Her father grants her forgiveness, gives her the money, and learns that she believes Nikhil is in love with her rather than with Karishma. Later, Nikhil calls Meeta and apologises for not accompanying her to Goa when she first requested him to do so seven years prior. Meeta informs him that they still have time to flee. When Nikhil visits Meeta and sees Karishma enjoying herself with her sibling, he realises the difficulties and goes home knowing he cannot harm Karishma.

Meeta leaves her house on the wedding day without telling anyone and leaves her phone in Karishma's room. Her calls and several texts from Nikhil go unanswered. When Meeta's father arrives at the mandap, he is informed that she has gone for China. After reading the texts on Meeta's phone, which she discovered in her room, Karishma understands she has lost Nikhil. She requests that Nikhil leave the wedding, and her father agrees with her choice. At the airport, Meeta sobs and contemplates suicide before giving up and returning to the wedding. When she and Nikhil reunite, they declare their love for one another and kiss to make it official.

Nikhil and Meeta are seen leaving for Germany at the end of the film while they are at the airport. He is informed by Meeta that they are about to encounter another issue.
