Anthony Maras' action thriller Hotel Mumbai was released in 2018. Influenced by the 2009 docudrama Surviving Mumbai about the 2008 Attacks in Mumbai at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in India, it is a co-production between India, Australia, and the United States. Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher, Sandeep Bhojak, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Manasi Joshi, Suhail Nayyar, Mariette Valsan, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo are among the actors who appear in the movie.
Waiter Arjun reports for duty at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, India, on November 26, 2008, under the supervision of executive chef Hemant Oberoi. The day's visitors also include former Spetznaz agent Vasili and British-Iranian socialite Zahra Kashani and her American husband David, along with their young son Cameron and his nanny Sally.
The hotel is among 12 locations in Mumbai that are the target of a coordinated attack that night by terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba group, led by "the Bull." The local police are compelled to wait for backup from New Delhi because they are ill-prepared and untrained to confront the onslaught. Arjun, David, Zahra, and Vasili are stuck at the hotel restaurant with a number of other guests throughout the ensuing turmoil, while Sally stays with Cameron in their hotel suite. Sally and Cameron hide in a closet as a woman escaping the terrorists enters the hotel room, and the militants shoot the woman before fleeing.
David is able to get past the terrorists after learning about Sally's close call and reach Sally and Cameron. Arjun leads the other visitors to the Chambers Lounge, a private club concealed inside the hotel, where they may hopefully stay safe. Sally and Cameron are confined in a closet as David is taken hostage and chained by the terrorists during David, Sally, and Cameron's effort to reunite with the others.
The hotel's security room is where police officer DC Vam and his colleague seek to penetrate in order to follow the terrorists' whereabouts. Arjun tries to take a very injured visitor inside the hospital, but when she sees the police, she panics and runs away, whereupon a terrorist kills her. The officers are led by Arjun to the security room, where they find the terrorists preparing to enter the Chambers Lounge. Ram gives Arjun the go-ahead to stay while he attacks the terrorists, hurting Imran in the process.
Zahra and Vasili decide to leave the room to flee against Oberoi's advice, along with a few other visitors. However, Zahra and Vasili are captured and taken hostage alongside David, while the rest are massacred in their attempt to flee.
Imran calls his family while monitoring the hostages and tells them that the terrorists dispersed to Mumbai on the pretence of doing military training. He also learns that the terrorists' families have not yet received any of the money that the Bull had pledged to give them.
When the NSG finally show up, the Bull tells the terrorists to set the hotel on fire. The Bull commands Imran to execute the hostages. Imran shoots David and Vasili but when Zahra starts chanting a Muslim prayer, he spares her, allowing her to free herself and flee.
Sally and Cameron are intercepted by Arjun as they evacuate the remaining guests with Oberoi. Zahra is rescued by an airborne work platform before rejoining Sally and Cameron after the NSG eliminate the last terrorists. Arjun goes home to his wife and child once the hotel has been secured.
The attack's perpetrators are still at free, however the hotel was rebuilt, and some of its components were reopened within months, according to the closing script. The epilogue includes footage of the hotel's formal reopening as well as a memorial to the personnel and visitors.
