In 1999, Rajshri Productions released the family drama film Hum Saath Saath Hain, which was directed and written by Sooraj R. Barjatya. Along with a large supporting cast that includes Alok Nath, Himani Shivpuri, Reema Lagoo, Shakti Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, and Mahesh Thakur, the movie stars Mohnish Bahl, Tabu, Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, and Karisma Kapoor. The plot is around a mixed family and their values of unity, who drift off as a result of a miscommunication.

The story begins in the past when wealthy businessman Ramkishan Chaturvedi tragically lost his beloved wife Lakshmi. Their kid Vivek is 1 year old. Vivek acknowledges and respects Mamta as his mother and welcomes Ramkishan's second marriage to her. Prem, Sangita, and Vinod are the three children the two have afterwards. A few years later, Vinod becomes handicapped while trying to save Prem from an accident. 

19 years later, after finishing his studies, Prem returns from the US. Radhika, Sangita's daughter, and Anand, her husband, share their home. Vinod is a busy student. For his hand, Vivek is currently receiving treatment. The four siblings respectfully wish Ramkishan and Mamta on their anniversary celebration.

Sadhna, the daughter of Ramkishan's business partner Adarsh, has a strong attraction to Vivek after witnessing his affection for them. Adarsh sends her a marriage proposal. In agreement, Vivek marries Sadhna. Vinod has a secret crush on Sapna.

They exhibit Prem and Preeti's love. Everyone consents to talk with them. Prem and Preeti eventually learn that Vinod and Sapna also get engaged. Vivek becomes the chief executive of Ramkishan's business.

When Anand's sibling Anurag defrauds him of an inheritance and a stake of the family business, things take a vicious turn. This incident causes Mamta to feel uneasy. Her three friends, Dharamraj, and their arguments for Vivek handling the family inheritance fill her head with ideas in the meantime. Mamta becomes highly anxious as a result.

She disagrees with Ramkishan's choice and wants the business divided evenly among all of his sons. He rejects it since it will split the family. After learning the heartbreaking news, Vivek begs Ramkishan to give Prem control of the family business and then he and Sadhna return to Rampur, their ancestral hamlet. They have Vinod with them.

Prem declines to succeed Vivek as the family's chief. In an effort to avoid additional family strife, Vivek persuades him to comply with the plan. Prem informs Mamta that he won't wed and cannot take the place of Vivek if she so chooses. Anurag eventually accepts his error and rejoins Anand.

Sangita requests Mamta to return Vivek. Mamta enters Rampur with Ramkishan after realising her errors. A boy is born out of Sadhna in the hospital. Preeti and Sapna are later wed by Prem and Vinod. Dharamraj apologises after realising that bad behaviour cannot sever a family's affection. Everyone enjoys a happy ending.

Hum Saath Saath Hain was one of the biggest and highest-grossing movies of the year 1999. The ensemble cast, along with the story and the message the movie gives was one of the major reasons for its success.
