Kannada cinema sometimes referred to as Sandalwood or Chandanavana, is the area of Indian cinema that is devoted to the creation of films in the Kannada language, which is widely used in the state of Karnataka. 

The first talkie Kannada movie was Sati Sulochana, which was produced and directed by Y. V. Rao in 1934. The song Baare Baare from the 1972 film Naagarahaavu was Indian cinema's first slow-motion song.

Darshan Thoogudeepa, Sudeep, Yash, Puneeth Rajkumar, Upendra Rao, Rajkumar, Shiva Rajkumar, Rashmika Mandanna, Radhika Pandit, Pooja Gandhi, etc. are the best Kannada stars.

Rajkumar, a matinee star, made his acting debut in the 1954 film Bedara Kannappa following a lengthy run as a dramatist with Gubbi Veeranna's Gubbi Drama Company, which he joined at the age of eight.

The parallel film movement in India was greatly aided by Kannada cinema. The first names to join the movement were directors like Girish Kasaravalli, Girish Karnad, and G. V. Iyer. Also, well-known figures in the movement were T. S. Nagabharana and B. V. Karanth. But Puttanna Kanagal's movies were seen as a link between mainstream and underground cinema.
