The first episode of the Indian drama television series Naamkarann aired on Star Plus on September 12, 2016. It was based on the life of director Mahesh Bhatt and was inspired by the 1998 Bollywood film Zakhm.

From September 2016 to March 2017, the show's Avni Ayesha was played by young actor Arsheen Naamdaar alongside Viraf Patel, Barkha Sengupta, and Reema Lagoo.

The focus switched to Avni Ayesha (Aditi Rathore) and Neil Khanna after a jump of fifteen years (Zain Imam).

Reema Lagoo was replaced by Ragini Shah in May 2017 after the latter's passing. On May 18, 2018, the series came to an end after 463 episodes.It stars Aditi Rathore,Zain Imam,Mohit Chauhan , Sayatani Ghosh,Viraf Patel,Karam Rajpal,Prakriti and Pragya Nautiyal in important roles.

Avni Ayesha, age 9, resides with her mother, Ayesha Haider. Due to his mother Dayawanti, a devout yet dishonest Hindu woman, Avni's father, renowned filmmaker Ashish Mehta, meets them covertly. Because Ayesha is a Muslim, she despises her and rejects Avni at every turn. Neela Parikh, who makes friends with Avni and opposes Dayawanti, is made to wed Ashish by force.

Aman, Ayesha's son, is later born. Dayawanti murders Ayesha and snatches Aman, accusing Avni of being responsible. Dayawanti is also believed by Ashish, who has Avni arrested. Neela pays for her bail and takes her away, divorcing Ashish. Avni gets shot by Dayawanti after being duped, but Neela intervenes to save her. Avni is thought to be deceased.

After 15 years, Avni is an adult living with Neela under the name Ananya Verma. To learn her identify, ACP Neil Khanna is enlisted. Ali, a buddy from her youth who is now a café owner and Neil's best friend, is introduced to Avni. The marriage of Neil and Riya, the cousin of Avni, is set. Ali soon learns that Ananya is Avni and assists her. Aman, Avni's brother, is a spoiled brat who causes problems for Avni and Neela in the meantime.

Neil discovers afterwards that Ananya is actually Avni. To protect Neil from Mehtas', Avni marries him. Over time, Neil grows fond of Avni and learns about Avni's upbringing through Neela.

The truth regarding Ayesha's death has been discovered by Ashish, who was killed by his brother Ketan while facing Dayawanti, it has been revealed. Dayawanti and Ketan are arrested after being exposed by Avni, Neil, and Neela. Aman accepts Dayawanti's truth and changes for the better. Dayawanti, however, comes back and tries to murder Avni, but is slain by Aman, who is then taken into custody. Apni pardons Aman.

Juhi, Neil's ex-fiancée, returns and tells him that Vidyut is imprisoning their illegitimate daughter Mishti. After saving Mishti, Avni becomes close to her. The truth that Mishti is Vidyut's daughter is then made known. Avni is detained for Juhi's murder after Juhi is fatally shot.

Avni is released from prison six months later and gains martial capabilities. Neil succeeds to convince Vidyut to reveal that Avni is innocent. Neela is fatally shot in order to protect Neil from his drunken father Prakash. Avni is devastated by Neela's passing. Avni and Neil later have a wedding ceremony. In an effort to save Prakash, Vidyut threatens to wed Avni. Avni destroys Vidyut's home before fleeing with Mishti, giving the impression that everyone is dead.

Neil leaves his position as a police inspector after ten years and transitions into the radio industry. In an orphanage called Sukoon House, Avni has changed her name to Nilanjana and devotes her life to ensuring the welfare of children who are not their biological children.

Together with other orphaned youngsters, she looks after Mishti and her son Mowgli. Mishti aspires to be a singer and is a die-hard admirer of Karan Kapoor. Eventually, Mishti and Karan fall in love and marry.

In order for Neil to begin a new life with Mitali, Avni decides to leave the city with Mowgli. Neil and Khannas learn the truth about Mowgli. Neil is encouraged by Mitali to live with Avni and Mowgli. Avni and Neil reconcile at last.
