The narrative, which takes place in a small hamlet in Bihar, centres on Nimki, a frivolous and materialistic young woman who unintentionally ascends to the position of Mukhiya (chief) of the community. Nimki is obsessed with movies, a daydreamer, and oblivious to the evil in the world. Nimki adores Babbu and is convinced that Babbu feels the same way about her.

Nimki married Babbu Singh, the son of Tetar Singh, the previous village chief, after she was elected chief. Tetar wants to wed Nimki to further his political goals, but no one in Babbu's family is amenable to the idea. She was kept in a maid's room and treated accordingly. Nimki thought, however, that Tetar's family would one day love her.
