A playback Singer is a pre-recorded singer used in movie songs and is also referred to as a ghost singer. Actors or actresses lip-synch the songs for the cameras while playback singers record the music for soundtracks; the singer does not appear on the screen.

In particular, South Asian films made on the Indian subcontinent are renowned for employing this method. In India, well-known playback singers share the same prestige as well-known actors and music directors and are highly regarded by the general public.
