Poets are those who write poetry.

A poet's task is fundamentally one of communication, in which ideas are expressed symbolically or literally (for example, by talking about a particular place or incident). Since the dawn of time, poets have created works in almost every language that reflect the wide variety of civilizations and historical times they have lived in.

Professional poets in Ancient Rome were typically supported by patrons, and affluent supporters, including nobility and military leaders.

In pre-Islamic Arabic civilization, poets, or sha'ir, played a significant role as historians, fortunetellers, and propagandists.

The troubadours were a significant class of poets during the High Middle Ages who originated from a variety of social backgrounds. They were respected as performers or musicians just as much as poets, and they lived and travelled in many different places.

The royal support of poets persisted during the Renaissance era. However, many poets had additional means of revenue, notably Italians like Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, and Petrarch, whose poems were published in a guild for pharmacists, and William Shakespeare, whose works were performed on stage.

Many poets in the Romantic era and beyond were self-employed authors who supported themselves via their writing, frequently with help from family or income from other jobs.

Early poets were frequently well-read and well-educated individuals, whereas later poets were largely self-taught.

A few of the greatest poets of all time include Maya Angelou, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, and many more. Indian poets have also made an impact in the literary world a few greats include Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, Kabir Das, Mirza Ghalib, and many more.

In recent times Poetry and poets are rising again in spoken word events and even on digital platforms such as youtube. A few poets that have made it big in recent times are Aman Malhotra, Manraj Singh, Bhawna Jaiswal, Shorya Sehgal, Chloe Qureshi, Mukul Sharma, and many others.

In India, there aren't many literary prizes just for poetry. Both prose and poetry authors can win renowned honours like the Jnanapeeth, Sahitya Akademi, and Kalidas Samman, among others. Novelists have received the majority of the honours. These honours haven't been given to many poets.
