The protagonist of the tale is Kalyani, a young country girl who was left orphaned. She performs all household duties, but her aunt Kanchanmala and cousin Rupali find her intolerable and regularly abuse her. She is uneducated, and they forbid her from attending school. One day, Rajalaxmi Sardeshmukh and his son Soham visit their house to arrange for the marriage of Rupali and Soham, who is already seeing another girl. Contrary to her son's wishes, she chooses to make Kalyani her daughter-in-law instead of Rupali since she likes her more. The story then follows Kalyani, a modest, innocent bride who weds into the Sardeshmukh family. Kalyani is mentored by Rajlaxmi, the strict matriarch of the Sardeshmukh household.
