Rahul Dholakia, Gauri Khan, Ritesh Sidhwani, and Farhan Akhtar worked together to create the 2017 Indian action movie Raees through their respective production companies, Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment. The makers of Raees have disputed claims that it is based on the life of the criminal Abdul Latif. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Uday Tikekar in important roles.
During India's Republic Day weekend, on January 25, 2017, the movie was released. Overall, critics gave it favourable reviews.
A bright young man named Raees, who lives in the alcohol-prohibited state of Gujarat, becomes involved in the illegal liquor trade at a young age. As a means of self-deception, he employs his mother's maxim that no profession is beneath another and that no religion is superior to any profession. He begins working for a local criminal named Jairaj, along with his best friend Sadiq, who admires Raees for his creative ideas for smuggling. He chooses to leave Jairaj as his influence and power increase and enlists the aid of a criminal leader named Musabhai to launch his own company.
He becomes very well-liked in his neighbourhood because he gives them alcohol and hires them to take and deliver orders. As a result, he has political backing from both the chief minister and Pashabhai, the head of the opposition.
ACP J. A. Majmudar, a trustworthy and strong police officer, is in the meantime transferred to Fatehpur and begins a significant crackdown on alcohol dealers, focused on Raees. The most of the dealers are affected by this, with the exception of him, who manages to elude Majmudar. This results in tense relations and a botched assassination attempt by Jairaj. After that, Raees kills him in retribution. Raees weds his neighbour Aasiya and has a son with her in the interim.
He persuades the CM to move Majmudar to the Police Control Room at the baby shower and accepts a new real estate project that is offered to him. Everything appears to be going well for him now that Majmudar is gone and development is in full flow. However, Majmudar is still monitoring his movements via phone taps and moles that he previously established.
As a publicity gimmick, the CM sends Raees to jail for a short period of time when he publicly hits Pashabhai after an argument. The CM and Pasha forge an alliance for the upcoming municipal elections when Raees is imprisoned. Raees chooses to run for office after realising he has been deceived; he leverages his popularity to win.
The CM summons Majmudar to Fatehpur because he believes he poses an immediate threat and proclaims the project's plot to be protected land, making building unlawful. Raees incurs a huge debt to the neighbourhood he persuaded to contribute to the project. A curfew is imposed as a result of community unrest in the state, making the situation worse and endangering his booze company.
Raees, who is very broke, asks Musabhai for assistance and is offered money in exchange for smuggling gold in via boat.
Bombs start going off in India in rapid succession. Raees learns that Musa covered up his RDX smuggling by using the gold. All of Raees' associates are either apprehended or dead as a result of a large cross-country police operation. Raees, who is weeping and broken-hearted, kills Musabhai and his men for exploiting him to murder innocent people. He then gives himself up to Majmudar even though he knows that he will be killed. Raees and Majmudar discuss their time together before Majmudar shoots Raees. He thinks back on his life experiences and his mother's lessons as he falls. Majmudar departs while reflecting on Raees's parting comments.
