Rapping is a musical style of vocal delivery that combines 'rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street slang' and can be done in a number of ways, usually while being chanted or performed over a beat or other musical accompaniment.

The artists who perform the art of Rapping are known as rappers or Emcees.

The basic components of a rap song include a beat along with Content, Flow, and Cadence.

Rap is sometimes associated with hip-hop music in particular since it is a key component of that genre, yet its history predates hip-hop culture by many years.

Rap is normally done Acappella or without an accompaniment over a beat, which is frequently produced by a DJ, turntablist, or beatboxer.

The origins of rap can be found in Africa. Hip-hop music didn't even exist when West African griots were telling stories rhythmically over drums and basic instruments.

A rapper must also master vocal presence, enunciation, and breath control in order to perform a rap effectively. The peculiarity of a rapper's voice on tape is referred to as vocal presence. A smooth rap depends on clear enunciation, yet some rappers try to exaggerate it for comedic and artistic purposes. Breath control, or taking breaths without pausing one's performance, is a critical ability for rappers to learn and a requirement for every MC. A rapper with inadequate breath control cannot deliver challenging verses without inadvertently pausing. 

Rappers can choose from a variety of genres, the most prominent genres or styles include Old School, Newschool, Dancehall, Lofi, Pop and many more.

A few legendary rappers in the Hip Hop game include Nas, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and The Game.

Rap Music is also evolving in India thanks to the movie Gullyboy which revolves around the underground Hip Hop artists of India. The movie has resulted in the emergence of many young Indian rappers such as Hanumankind, Akash Dadlani, Rapper Maddy, Shubhankar Vaid, Yashraj, Mc Altaf, and many more.

Rappers make use of literary devices like wordplay, alliteration, and double entendres which are common in traditional poetry. Rappers like Fabolous and Lloyd Banks have composed entire songs with similes in every line, while MCs like Rakim, GZA, and Jay-Z are well-recognised for the metaphorical nature of their raps. 

Similes and metaphors are frequently employed in rap lyrics. Rappers like Lupe Fiasco are well renowned for the intricate lyrics of their tracks that use multiple long metaphors.
