Madhav "Maddy" Shastri provides narrative at the beginning of the tale (R. Madhavan). Deendayal Shastri (Anupam Kher), the proprietor of a music store, hopes that Maddy would one day take over the business. Maddy is Deendayal's son. Maddy, on the other hand, is a complete brat who is not serious about his studies and is well-known at his campus. Rajeev "Sam" Samra (Saif Ali Khan), a model student with whom Maddy is often at odds, stands in contrast to him. The hostility is so intense that Maddy even makes an attempt to frame Sam. Sam issues Maddy a one-on-one challenge, and Maddy gladly accepts. The instructors, however, break up the fight.
Sam is later challenged by Maddy at his graduation celebration, but this time Sam refuses and lets him leave. Sam leaves the institution after receiving his degree but assures Maddy that he will eventually finish what he started (i.e., the fight).
Three years later, Maddy is employed by a private company as a software instructor. His perspective has softened considerably, but not changed. He observes a girl dancing in the rain with some youngsters on his trip to Delhi. He just sees her briefly but is enamoured by her attractiveness and describes her as "my kinda girl." Later, when he and his college pals attend the wedding of a former classmate, Maddy accidentally runs into the girl again and discovers that her name is Reena.
He feels a strong attraction to her and makes vain attempts to find out more about her. But when he runs into her in Mumbai, fate brings them together once more. He soon finds out that Reena is about to propose to Rajeev, a childhood friend of hers who now resides in the USA. Maddy also finds out that Reena is unaware about Rajeev's current appearance and that he will be visiting India the following week to meet her.
With Reena, Maddy is now madly in love and discouraged by the prospect of losing her. Maddy decides to pose as Rajeev and reveal his true identity to Reena at the appropriate time after being convinced to do so by his father and friends.
In those five days, he shows Reena his affection, and they have a great time together. Reena, who had just liked him as a friend before, also falls in love with him. When Reena professes her love for him, everything goes smoothly, and Maddy decides to come clean. Unfortunately, the real Rajeev returns before he can, and Reena is stunned to find out about Maddy's forgery. Reena makes the decision to end her connection with Maddy, who tries to persuade her of his actual motivations but she won't speak to him. Frustrated, Maddy decides to use threats to persuade Rajeev to call off the wedding.
Maddy is surprised to discover that Rajeev is actually Sam, a competitor from college. Sam is even more enraged to discover that his impersonator is actually his bitter former college rival. Rajeev is of the opinion that Maddy's relationship with Reena is merely a result of their competition. Reena is still unconvinced of him despite Maddy's best efforts to speak with her and tell her the facts in a serious manner. Rajeev and Reena decide on a date for their wedding after numerous failed attempts to speak with Reena. After telling his pals that they have made a serious error, Maddy allows Rajeev to return to Reena and advises them to forget about her. Despite Maddy's lies to her, Reena realises that she genuinely began to fall in love with her.
Rajeev finally confronts Reena and asks her if she loves Maddy more than him. In the meanwhile, Maddy chooses to accept a job offer from his current work in San Francisco, California, after first declining it, in order to heal his suffering heart from his memories of Reena. Reena is taken to the airport by Rajeev after he realises she still has feelings for Maddy. Maddy and Rajeev notice one another. Maddy believes Rajeev has come to correct him yet again. Maddy and Reena express their affections for one another. Even though Rajeev is devastated, he pretends to have Maddy's previous attitude by telling her that "we can never be friends" and sending her best wishes. Reena and Maddy come back together.
