Sunil Dutt's 1981 romantic action movie Rocky is set in India. Sanjay Dutt, son of Sunil Dutt, makes his acting debut in this movie, which also has Reena Roy, Tina Munim, Amjad Khan, Raakhee, Ranjeet, Shakti Kapoor, and Aruna Irani in significant parts.

An intelligent young guy named Shankar works for Ratanlal in the construction industry. Shankar, who is also the head of the union, wants Ratanlal to impose regulations to ensure the safety of the workforce. Prior to making this happen, Shankar is fatally injured at work, leaving behind his wife Parvati and little son Rakesh. Due to this incident, Rakesh is traumatised, and this trauma keeps replaying in his mind whenever his mother approaches him. Rakesh is fostered by Robert and his wife Kathy, who give him the new name Rocky, and Parvati is warned to stay away from him.

Rocky grew up not knowing who his real mother is. Rocky leads a carefree life until he starts to fall for Renuka. He discovers then that his real name is Rakesh, that his mom is still around, and that his father was not killed by accident but rather intentionally. Rocky decides to take revenge for his father's murder. He receives assistance from a rape victim. But he is unaware that his days, as well as those of his loved ones, could be getting shorter.

The movie was released only a few days after Sunil's wife and Sanjay's mother, Nargis, passed away. They even kept an empty chair during the screening to mark her presence. It was listed as 1981's No. 10 highest-grossing movie.
