The 2021 Hindi-language comedy-horror film Roohi was made by Dinesh Vijan and directed by Hardik Mehta. In addition to Manav Vij, Sarita Joshi, and Alexx O'Neil playing supporting roles, the movie also stars Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Sharma, and Rajkummar Rao in the key roles.
Bhawra Pandey and Kattanni Qureshi are from a tiny village named Bagadpur where it is traditional for the boy who wants to marry the girl to kidnap her against her will. As part of a deal by a man who wants to marry her, they are given the assignment by their employer and the leader of the kidnapping group, Guniya Bhai, to kidnap Roohi. However, due to a death in the groom's family, they are forced to keep her hidden in an abandoned woodworking shop until after the burial, when they can wed her. Roohi is actually possessed by a supernatural entity, which Bhawra discovers during their stay and is confirmed by her father.
Bhawra begins to fall for Roohi and tries to persuade the spirit to leave her body; on the other hand, Kattanni is taken in by the evil spirit, who goes by the name of Afza, and seeks to push her forward so that he can speak to her instead of Roohi. They discover that the spirit is a Pichal Peri (a witch with reversed feet), and that she will not depart until both she and the girl she is possessing are wed. They are told to leave Roohi alone by Guniya Bhai since he is worried about the police looking into her kidnapping, but they refuse, so he must send his minions to do it.
Bhawra learns from an elderly woman that the "Pichal Peri" must be forced into becoming the mistress of a married man in order to be forced out of the body she is occupying. The old woman had already been exorcised after being possessed by the same witch earlier, but not before the spirit had murdered her faked husband in a fit of wrath. Afza attacks the henchman, so Bhawra, Roohi, and Kattanni flee to the village of Chimmattipur, where Bhawra weds a dog in order to deceive the witch. Arriving to exact revenge, Guniya Bhai discovers that Afza must get married in less than a day.
When Bhawra and Kattanni show up at the wedding, Kattanni persuades Afza to marry him by dressing in Bhawra's bridal garb. The elderly woman interrupts them and shows Afza the footage of the dog wedding to prove that the marriage is fake. When she sees Bhawra dressed as the groom, she thinks Kattanni is there. Afza, who is furious, orders Bhawra to get married, but Roohi intervenes to stop him. Then, rather than viewing Afza as an enemy, Roohi chooses to wed Afza herself, accepting the power Afza had given her.
Bhawra and Kattanni are left behind after Roohi and Afza accept one another. The elderly woman claims that Roohi has fled away with herself when the police and Roohi's father arrive, but the old woman vanishes, suggesting that she may have actually been helping Afza the entire time since she had previously married "Pichal Peri."
Roohi was not well received by the critics and it mostly received negative reviews with most people criticising its lack of entertainment factor compared to its predecessor, 'Stree'. Jhanvi Kapoor and Rajkumar Rao received praises for their performance and the cameo of Budhiya, played by Sarita Joshi was also praised by the general audience. Roohi failed to create an impact at the box office, grossing a total of INR 30 Crores which can be attributed to its weak storyline and the rising number of COVID cases in the country.
